These food diaries are always such a joy. I get to relive the flavors and experiences and share all of my favorites with you. My long weekend getaway to Seattle, Washington with my mom a few weeks ago was a delight and, of course, much too short. My cousin lives in the area, so us three ladies attacked the food and frivolity offerings the best we could in just a few short days. This post is just on the food we enjoyed. I’ll be sharing a complete guide on what to do in three days in Seattle next week.Your Instagram recommendations were so amazingly helpful. Many of these finds were all thanks to your suggestions. The rest are favorites of ours and one last-minute decision that turned out to be one of the best meals during the trip! We stayed at the Warwick Downtown Seattle, which included breakfast. My mom and I stayed at this hotel our last visit to the Emerald City and one of the selling points for my mom was enjoying the pastry basket and hot tea at Margaux, while looking out on the streets of Seattle. Last time we watched the snow fall. This time, it was the sound of raindrops that kept us entertained.
Trying cold brew and iced coffee was obviously a priority for me. My two favorites were Storyville in Pike Place Market and Zoka Coffee in Greenlake. There are a few locations of each, but I can’t recommend these specific locations enough. Both coffee shops look perfect for sitting all day long and the cold brews were delicious. The morsels looked divine at both places, but I didn’t try them. We also tried coffee at Slate Coffee. The coffee was good, but the ambiance was lacking. If you’re in the Ballard or West Woodland area, however, it’s worth a stop.The pastries from breakfast at the Warwick kept us pretty full, but the morsels at Zoka and Storyville definitely caught our eyes. Bakery Nouveau‘s almond croissant was highly recommended stop. I can attest that the almost croissant was quite tasty! Other pastries were good as well, but the almond croissant took the cake (or the croissant, I guess) for our party. The coffee (I had a cappuccino) wasn’t anything to brag about, but the offering was a nice accompaniment.
Another not to miss is Dahlia Bakery – one of Tom Douglas’ many Seattle restaurants. We tried the homemade fig newton and the granola bar – both were delicious! They also had bread, cookies, pies, tarts, and just about anything you can imagine. It’s a small place (no indoor seating), so get ready to be joining other Dahlia lovers in the tight quarters to get your hands on a goodie.
We decided just as we walked up to Pike Place Market that we were ready for lunch. Just across the street from where we stood was Steelhead Diner. If only for the view of the market from the window, we decided this would be a good stop. When they put fresh baked bread and herb-infused olive oil with a pat of butter on the table, I knew I was going to enjoy myself. This was our impromptu find that is now a must for lunch or dinner on my list of Seattle eats.For our first meal on the trip, we enjoyed a prix fixe dinner at Trace at W Seattle. Luckily each course had three options, so we ordered one of everything to say we tried it all! The flavors were delicious and the menu had a variety of vegetable, fish, and meat dishes. My favorite dishes were the sauteed shrimp + manila clams and, much to my surprise, the lemongrass pork shoulder tacos. If we’d only had these two dishes, I would have been one happy camper. The flavors were spot on and we couldn’t let a single bite go.
If you want to ring my bell, just say the words ‘wine bar’ and I’m in. I spotted Purple Cafe + Wine Bar when I first started researching Seattle food and then it came up more than once in the recommendations I received. We had a sampling of their menu and wine selection. Even if you aren’t a wine lover, this is a great stop. The food is phenomenal and the atmosphere is great! The marcona almonds, scallops, and crab cakes were personal favorites, but every dish and pouring were a treat. Plan on making reservations and enjoying a long meal.
Our last day in town, we made late night reservations at the Icon Grill – a fun, love-filled atmosphere in downtown. They have a great selection of cocktails and the entrees were absolutely on point. We didn’t have great service, but I believe that was just on our waiter and not representative of the restaurant as a whole.
We enjoyed something a little different each morning at Margaux in the Warwick Seattle Hotel. They offer an array of classic breakfast dishes as well as fruit, granola, yogurt, and a perfect-for-two pastry basket with very delicious bran muffins!

top right : The amazing facade of Storyville. Don’t miss this location. It’s in the building just behind Pike Place Market (still considered part of the market). Enter through a door on the south side of the building and climb a few flights of stairs to the top.

TRACE at W SEATTLE
top left : lemongrass pork shoulder tacos. I’m not much of a pork fan, but I found myself reaching for a second taco as soon as I’d finished the first. The meat is moist and flavorful. The combination with the lettuce, jalapenos, and pickled vegetables was unbeatable.
top middle : sauteed shrimp and manila clams – so amazingly delicious
top right : braised short rib on gremolata pappardelle pasta – the pasta and meat blended beautifully. Lacking any real sauce, the moist meat was a great accompaniment to the pasta.
bottom left : roasted crispy skin salmon w. braised root vegetables and shimeji mushroom sauce. The salmon was perfectly cooked. This was my mom’s favorite dish.

top left : rhubarb crisp w. housemade blackberry gelato. The crisp and gelato were individually wonderful, though all together it got a bit sweet.
top right : gluten free chocolate cake w. chocolate center and root beer sauce. My mom and cousin loved this dessert. If you’re a chocolate fan, this is the dessert for you.
bottom : bread pudding w. housemade cinnamon ice cream. This was my favorite of the three desserts. The bread pudding was delightful. As a huge fan of cinnamon, I loved the ice cream, but not everyone at the table agreed. We did all agree on the pudding itself though!
PURPLE CAFE + WINE BAR
top left : marcona almonds served w. dry port – a delightful way to start off the evening. I need to try to recreate these almonds, they were so tasty.
top right : seared scallops w. beaujolais blanc. Scallops done right melt in your mouth, and these absolutely did!
center top: grilled cauliflower, greek yogurt, cilantro, golden raisins, and peppers w. pinot gris. I’m always a fan of cauliflower. I would have liked more peppers on mine, but I think I got a plate with less than others (and I like heat!).
center middle : dungeness crab cakes w. red pepper remoulade w. meroits. If you like crab cakes, these are some of the best I’ve ever had.
center bottom : muscovy duck breast, caramelized apple puree, poached apples, and bitter greens w. pinot noir. The duck breast was perfectly cooked. Duck fans rejoice!

top middle : Alaskan razor clam chowder w. apple smoked bacon and truffle oil
top right : winter vegetable chili – the perfect dish on a cool day. I loved all the root vegetables!
bottom : pan roasted broccoli, roasted cashews, preserved lemons, and dried chiles. This dish was hands-down our favorite. It’s not spicy. It has a great freshness with a slightly Asian flavor, but nothing overpowering. It was amazing. Don’t miss out on this!

The potatoes were a fun flavor combination – to be copied for sure.
bottom right : shrimp, papaya, and avocado salad (bay shrimp subbed for tiger shrimp). A seriously delicious salad and a great choice once we saw the dessert coming our way!
