Last year, I did monthly salads as a way to expand my recipe collection for whole grains and veggies in a variety of serving options. This year, I’m challenging myself to a completely different genre – the wonderful world of mixology. I’ve slowly become more and more excited about cocktails. Lots of new restaurants, especially in LA and even when we lived in Oakland, have artisan cocktails with flavors that change with the seasons, mixing flavors together in unexpected ways. And I’m really loving all the sangria recipes I’ve been creating thus far! I decided that I would share this libatious journey with you on my Instagram account. I’ll be posting at least one cocktail recipe per month (but probably more, so don’t forget to follow along! Be sure to check out the first cocktail recipe – a Pom Lady, but then come right back for this tangerine cocktail.
I want to use seasonal flavors in my cocktails and what better choice is there than fresh citrus right now, right? Tangerines are sweeter than oranges, so they seemed a great place to start. I also feel fairly comfortable with using orange juice in a cocktail, so easily swapping out the fresh tangerine juice for the orange juice was a great first step. The natural sweetness of the tangerines pairs nicely with the stronger whiskey profile, making even non-whiskey lovers a fan of this tangy tangerine cocktail. I also love adding fresh herbs to cocktails, usually to cut a bit of the sweetness. I made an incredibly simple (hah!) rosemary simple syrup. The herby sweet liquid adds another level of deliciousness without the overwhelming sugary taste normal simple syrup might provide. This tangerine cocktail is a taste treat sensation for sure!
TANGERINE COCKTAIL w. ROSEMARY
There are a number of orange juice cocktails but not enough tangerine juice cocktails in my humble opinion. This one captures that sweet tartness and pairs it deliciously with subtle, earthy rosemary-infused simple syrup!
- 2 parts tangerine juice approx. 3 tangerines per serving
- 1/2 part rosemary simple syrup recipe below
- 1-1/2 parts Whiskey
rosemary simple syrup
Dissolve 1/3 Cup sugar into 1/2 Cup water with 3 rosemary sprigs over medium heat until dissolved (3-4 minutes). Let cool. Remove rosemary sprigs. Chill.
Combine tangerine juice, rosemary simple syrup, and whiskey. Serve over ice. Garnish with rosemary sprig.
