It’s fig season and I’m hooked, of course. I had my first fresh figs in Nice, France on our honeymoon. I’m not sure why I’d never tried them before, but it makes the memory of having them for the first time all the more fabulous. They’re so naturally sweet and pretty – no matter the variety. I used mint leaf to garnish these sweet fruit burrata toasts. As I enjoyed them, however, I realized the mint leaves would have been great mixed into the fruit. The maple syrup provides just a hint of sweetness. You could use honey if you wanted, but I fear that would be overly sweet. But then you could add finishing salt for a truly delicious situation. And I apologize for all the “toast” recipes lately. Well, no, maybe I’m not that sorry because they’ve all been so, so good! Hello spicy avocado toast and ceviche avocado toast! I may be single-handedly supporting the bread market at this point…
How to Pick Figs
Fig season actually happens twice. The first round of figs come in early June. The second round comes August to October. Now while I will admittedly eat figs all the way through the summer any which way I can, I think the figs in the “second” season are so much tastier, sweeter, and more vibrant in color. You want figs to be rather tender to the touch but not squishy. Any which way you cut them will be beautiful, but I love cutting them from the stem down. That is if I’m not just biting it all as I snack on them before lunch and dinner!
FIG + BERRY FRUIT BURRATA TOASTS
I'm a fan of any crostini, tartine, or toast with fresh cheese and delicious fruit or veggies. This fig and burrata toast is impossibly easy and so beautiful - it's the perfect dish to serve guests and it comes together in no time!
- 2 slices hearty bread e.g. sourdough
- 4 oz. burrata cheese
- 2 medium figs sliced
- 20 raspberries
- 2 teaspoons maple syrup
- finishing salt optional
- Toast bread until golden brown.
- Meanwhile, carefully mix fig slices, berries, and syrup.
- Divide cheese between toasts. Top with fruit mixture. Can top with fresh mint and/or finishing salt.
