Women’s Fall Fashion Trends
I heard a fascinating tidbit last year that people are shopping more for events in their lives than for the season. I keep asking my students this and their answers keep changing. I feel like it has to do a lot with age, but I think it also just depends on the person. I, for one, don’t have many ‘events’ that require special attire. Almost everything I do can involve jeans of some kind and a tailored top and outerwear. For this reason, and because I’d rather invest in a piece to wear for years to come, I still shop for the seasons and I highly doubt that will ever change! And one of the great things about fall fashion trends is that they tend to serve as a bridge between summer and winter, so your closet essentials aren’t so weather specific and can be worn throughout the seasons for years to come… Skinny jeans are great tucked in boots or with sandals. Mules are a comfortable transition piece – perfect until it starts raining or snowing! And these tees and button downs are really what ties it all together. So with all this in mind, I thought we should talk about 15 fall clothing must-haves. Some of these items I’ve had for a few seasons, some I’ve recently added to my wardrobe, and a few – I’m just really obsessed with!!
Fall Clothing Essentials 2017 from head to toe
In the last few years, I’ve become addicted to felt or wool fedoras. I think they are so classic and great with wavy, straight, curled, braided, and natural hair – fabulous for all my hair days! I love Goorin hats but have found some great ones a lot of fun places like this Brixton Fedora in Black. If you aren’t into hats yet, I’d recommend starting with a black one like this since it’s the most versatile. Then you can ease into other colors!
While I’m not incredibly experimental with make-up, I LOVE trying lip products and both of these are year round favorites of mine – though perfect for any fall beauty look. This Clinique Black Honey Almost Lipstick is my foray into bold lips. It isn’t too saturated or matte, so the color isn’t overwhelming. It’s also moisturizing and it matches the pH of your lips, so it works with everyone’s coloring. And if you’re loving the matte look but are scared like no other to try it out (I certainly was!), start with this NARS Velvet Matte Pencil. I love the Bahama color that’s a pale rose. It isn’t drying at all and it looks great with and without a layer of gloss over it!
Jewelry is always a fun accessory but with layers, it can be tricky to get the right piece. I’m big on pendant and especially longer necklaces. This Gorjana Double Pendant Necklace is bright but not overwhelming and would pair perfectly with all fall fashion trends! It’s also adjustable so you can make it whatever length you like (or change it from day to day)!
I’m now a firm believer in a down vest as a fall necessity in 2017 and every year. Vests can keep you so warm but aren’t as restricting as big coats. This J. Crew Down Vest has great gold details and J. Crew always make great quality clothing! Besides navy it’s available in black, red, a beautiful off-white, and a light blue! One for every day of the work week! They’re 25% off today, so you might go take a look…
Changing my bag with the seasons isn’t my normal M.O. Both of these bags, however, would be great year round, so it doesn’t feel too foreign. This Tory Burch Suede Saddle Bag caught my eye in this camel color and in olive green a month or so ago and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since. And, if we’re being totally upfront, I’m kind of in love with everything new from Tory Burch right now – structured top-handles, velvet shoulder bags, I love it all! And because I think every woman needs a backpack in her life, this Matt & Nat Faux Leather Backpack is beautifully constructed and perfectly chic!
Now for those must-have tops. Madewell, J. Crew, and Eddie Bauer are my go-tos for all layering pieces. I have this Madewell tee in 3 colors and love each and every one of them. Consider sizing down as they run quite large. These J. Crew Perfect Long Sleeve Tees have been in my closet for over five years and I have them in quite a number of colors. They’re comfortable, flattering, and they run a little longer (a dream for long torsos like mine)! Finally, we all need some plaid in our fall wardrobe. This Plaid Button Down Shirt has a mix of colors making it perfect to pair with browns and blacks!
The perfect scarf is more than just an outfit topper, it’s the difference between enjoying those breezy moments in bliss and running for cover! This adorable Madewell Wrap Scarf is oversized and so cute. A mix of tan, charcoal gray, and light pink, it’s also a versatile piece you won’t be able to live without this fall and winter! Talk about perfect for traveling!!
Since I think every woman needs a pair of skinny black jeans before all else in life, I had to include these Current/Elliott Stiletto Ankle Jeans. I’ve been looking to update my black jeans for a few years now and finally found the right pair with these guys. They’re a bit stretchy, but they’ll stay up like we need (thank you Current/Elliott for making perfect jeans)! They’re great with flats, booties, and will tuck into boots perfectly in the coming months!
Before we slide into those amazing shoes, we have to keep our toes warm. I’m big on cute socks and these Kate Spade Socks are, no surprise, just right. Depending on your outfit and mood, you can opt for a classic gray pattern or perhaps roses and cheetah print are what you need!
And now that your toes are toasty, slip into obnoxiously comfortable, sleek, chic, nothing-but-the-best-shoes! I know, it sounds over-the-top, but these shoes are worth every bit of excitement. Slide mules have been on trend for the last year or two. I’ve wavered on my feelings on the trend as a lot of the mule slide flats look more like sloughy slippers than chic shoes (even the $700 pairs I saw women wearing). This season, however, I’ve seen more pairs that are structured, chic, and made my companies I know make great shoes. This pair of AGL Mule Slides will hopefully be my next shoe purchase. They have a bit of a heel (less than an inch) which prevents the sloughing. The soles are sturdy; the interior feels buttery soft; and my mom swears by their shoes. I know that sounds funny, but she’s one of the few women who’s pickier than I am about shoe comfort, so I heed her recommendations wholeheartedly. And when you need a completely enclosed shoe, get yourself a great pair of flat ankle booties. These Marc Fisher booties slide on and off easily (amazing for travel) and they’re so comfortable – even for my slightly wider feet. If you’re looking for booties, these should be them. They come in other colors/materials, including a tan suede that’s calling my name! You can see how I dressed up a flannel shirt with them here and paired with the best travel work bags for women here.
