Dry brushing seems to have taken over the beauty world in the last few years. I’ve actually been dry brushing for about two years. The funny thing is, however, that I’ve been doing it at various times for different reasons and only recently have I found the reason to keep me doing it twice a day – dry brushing for cellulite! So, depending on what your needs/wants are, here are THREE reasons why you need to start dry brushing today.
Dry Brushing to Remove Toxins
When I first bought my dry brush (you can get a good one for $10, so it isn’t expensive), it was after I read an article on how dry brushing was so good for you. Why is it so good for you? Dry brushing is said to help your body release toxins. The circular motions of the dry bristles on your skin help stimulate skin regeneration, help your body release toxins (amazing since your skin is your largest organ), and offer stress relief. Though you want to dry brush your whole body, especially important spots to hit are behind your knees and your elbows.
For dry brushing you want to work your way toward your heart. I start at my ankles and work my way up my torso. Next I do my arms, beginnings at my wrists and working in to my heart.
Dry Brushing to Exfoliate Your Skin
Obviously dry brushing to release toxins felt healthy and was super inexpensive. I also really liked the stress relief it offered (either because of the circular motions I was making with my hands or the feel of the brush on my skin). But my excitement for it started to wane. In the meantime, I’d started dry brushing my legs just before shaving to help get rid of any dry skin and prevent razor burn (an issue with sensitive skin). This was a practice I’ve continued since then because it absolutely works, BUT I was making two mistakes. First, since I don’t shave every single day, I wasn’t dry brushing enough. Second, since I’m oftentimes lazy and only shave my lower leg (ok, most of the time), I was only dry brushing that area – completely ignoring my upper leg. FAIL.
Dry Brushing for Cellulite
Ok. So, change of pace. About two months ago I got a third reason to start dry brushing more often and it’s been reason enough for me to be fairly emphatic about it. I mean, there are very few things I’m willing to do TWICE PER DAY. After my first chemical peel, I asked my esthetician if they ever did peels on other parts of the body. I was obviously thinking about the cellulite on the back of my legs. She said that yes they absolutely did chemical peels on all body parts, but that before we did any treatments, I’d have to start using an exfoliating scrub and start dry brushing for cellulite on my upper legs. Since I wasn’t about to pay for peels on my legs right away, I decided to try the scrub and dry brushing (both of which I had), but to do them on MY WHOLE LEG – crazy, right?! So for the past two months, I’ve been dry brushing in the morning and at night before bed. Even on nights when I don’t want to do a darn thing before bed, I dry brush at least my upper legs and derriere!
Does it work?
So, I have noticed definite improvement in my cellulite, but I don’t think it’s the dry brushing on its own. The twice daily dry brushing AND the consistent use of a good scrub at least 3x per week (I love this one) AND good hydration, including body oil (see my post here on body oils with sensitive skin) are the key. With this whole setup you’re removing dead skin, encouraging new skin cell growth, massaging any trapped liquid, and rehydrating for plump skin. If you’re up to it, it would be great to do this on your whole body, but I’m just sticking with my thighs and backside for the moment!!
So, first things first – find that dry brush you bought but haven’t used OR buy your first dry brush and get going – whatever your reason may be!
