I’ve mentioned before that I’m a country girl. Raised in northern California, I grew up surrounded by agriculture and foothills. In the area where I’m from, they grow two things – rice and almonds! In fact, I’ll teach you how to sound like a local. If you grow almonds, they’re pronounced “ahh-munds” (like apples). Yep, they “knock the ‘ell’ right out of them!” Just a little ag humor for you today! Anyway, I’ve always loved almonds and find myself enjoying them in all meals at any time of day, so when California Almonds asked me to share a post about my favorite snacks with almonds, I couldn’t say yes fast enough…
Almonds at Breakfast
I am a very committed creature of habit. My most predictable habit, as much as my afternoon walks, is having a yogurt parfait in the morning. I love topping plain, greek yogurt with granola of some kind, and fruit. The best granolas have a bit of crunch to them, but I love adding slivered almonds for just that extra bit of crunch. Our dear friends gave us a lot of passion fruits, so my morning parfaits have been quite colorful of late!
Crunchy Snack Ideas for Afternoon Slumps
I suffer from afternoon slumps like everyone else. It’s not quite walk/coffee time, but I’m sinking in the sunset. While snacking is the go to for these slumps, it’s important to choose healthy snacks so you aren’t overloading on calories. I find that crunchy snacks are best for these times. My mini plate of goodies? Usually almonds (plain or roasted), a few crackers, and some dried fruit (for a boost of sugar)!
Healthy Portable Snacks for Life On the Go
So here’s the thing. I’m usually pretty good about planning my food when I’m out and about, but I’m not always perfect. Since learning that I’m hypoglycemic years ago, I make it a point to have snacks tucked away here and there (mostly in the car and in my purse).
My favorite healthy portable snack is trail mix. It doesn’t really go stale and it’s sturdy enough for life in my bag (who knows what goes on in there?!). These homemade trail mixes can be any combination of dried fruit, nuts (almonds of course), and seeds. I’ve had a bit of a sweet tooth this summer, so my recent snack bag has raw almonds, dried goji berries, and chocolate chips.
Thank you to California Almonds for sponsoring this snacks with almonds post. As always, all opinions are my own.
