‘Tis the season for gingerbread houses… and all the other wonderful things you can do with ginger! In addition to being used in food and beverages, cosmetics and beauty products, ginger has long been touted for its health and wellness benefits. While you may look forward to icing gingerbread cookies, let’s also add a bit of excitement this holiday season with all the ginger health benefits! Ginger is often used as a digestive aid, for anti-inflammatory properties, and to boost immunity. That doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy it in a tasty morsel or a luxurious beauty treatment, however. . .
A quick note: While ginger supplements are available in capsule form, fresh ginger root is even easier to come by and just as (if not more!) effective. As usual, Mother Earth knows what she’s doing!
Ginger Health Benefits + Uses
Here are a few ways to use ginger and capitalize on the benefits of this powerful plant this holiday season:
• Ginger candies (chews or hard candies) make great stocking stuffers and thoughtful gifts.
• A simple ginger tea can soothe a store throat or upset stomach and is perfect boosting your immunity during cold and flu season. To make at home, grate a small piece of fresh ginger root and add to a pot of boiling water. Simmer for 5-10 minutes. I like to add a squeeze of lemon juice and a pinch of cayenne. If you’re not interested in making your own, there are a number of teas with ginger in them. I love this ginger peach black tea and turmeric ginger herbal tea.
• These recipes for ginger bath salts and a ginger detox bath both require just a few standard kitchen ingredients (fresh ginger, Epsom salt, and lemon juice for the bath salts; Epsom salt, fresh ginger, baking soda and mustard powder for the detox bath). Since we all love a little pampering during the cold months and the holidays, why not make it good for your body and soul!
