First Trimester Nausea Relief

Pregnancy Nausea Relief Tips and Advice

One of the hardest things about being pregnant happens during that first trimester. If you’re anything like me, you are sticking to not telling people you’re pregnant until you hit a certain point. It was 12 weeks for me. Because you aren’t telling people, however, you also don’t have that community of help to solve the actually very normal things you’re going through. While everyone’s pregnancy is different, there are a few things with which I never found help online and only after sharing our news did I get some answers. The most crucial of these, for me, was first trimester nausea relief tips.

Of course I researched nausea relief online, but every website I found suggested ginger and vitamin B (more in a second). Ginger might have brought me a touch of relief, but not really anything worth noting. My doctor did prescribe a Vitamin B supplement. Between my prenatal vitamin and my DHA (fish oil) pills, that 5th pill seemed to put me over the top.

At about 16 weeks, I stopped taking the Vitamin B pills and felt so much better doing so. I just don’t like the idea of taking pills and having to swallow five every night was difficult for me. Anyway, the vitamin B may be something your doctor recommends and I do think it helps, but so does this…

First Trimester Nausea Relief

Feeling a little nauseous to crazy throwing up is totally normal during pregnancy (so lame!). Thankfully I didn’t suffer from throwing up (just one random bout of food poisoning), but the daily nausea was a real thing.

Somebody called this nausea “morning sickness.” Well mine usually happened midday and into the afternoon and evening. I’d be ok those first few hours and then I could never get my stomach to settle. It was so, so frustrating.

My immediate response was crackers and toast. That makes sense, doesn’t it? Well, at about 14 weeks, a dear friend told me that I’d been doing it all wrong and that I actually needed more protein…

What to Eat for Nausea Relief

So my friend, who actually isn’t a mom yet, told me that her sister handled first trimester nausea relief (really through the whole pregnancy) by eating meat right when she woke up.

Now, I have to tell you that during my first trimester, meat always sounded disgusting to me. The thought of eating some chicken or whatever right when I woke up almost made me throw up. Ok, so no meat in the wee hours of the morning. The idea of eating more protein in the morning (and all day long), however, IS SO IMPORTANT. It made such a difference – night and day!

Trying to make a more conscious effort to eat more protein that wouldn’t make me sick, I ate some kind of random things – stuff that sounded palatable. First up – the sous vide egg bites from Starbucks – they have 10-18 grams of protein! I ate these in the morning or afternoon, depending on my need.

Other funny additions were a random drive through for chicken fingers from Jack in the Box (totally not my norm), quesadillas for dinner (I usually avoid cheese), and ham lunch meat (nothing I’ve stayed away from). It was so, so insane how I could go from feeling about 40% to about 80-90% just with eating a good dose of protein.

Now, obviously sources of protein don’t need to be meat. I tried eating more peanut butter and greek yogurt when I wasn’t feeling great. These plant-based proteins helped, but maybe only half as well or half as long as eggs, cheese, and meat.

You do what you have to do – just remember to eat more protein. Even a few bites of solid protein is better than nothing!
