So here’s the thing. If there was one post you probably expected after I shared that I was expecting a little one, it was probably going to be denim related. I mean, obviously I would be most interested in the best maternity jeans. And, obviously, I was going to do some research and come up with my own (rather professional in my humble opinion) pick for the best pair of maternity jeans.
Well. I’ve figured it out. Through some sad and almost hugely embarrassing trial and error, I have found the one pair of jeans I think every pregnant woman should own. Crazy enough they were the first pair of jeans I bought and they’re the ones that most comfortably fit from about 18 weeks to at least 35 weeks seamlessly…
Best Maternity Jeans
Types of Maternity Jeans
So there are basically two types of maternity jeans. The first is the kind with not button or zipper closure and a piece of spandex that goes up and over your belly. The second is low cut and sits beneath your belly. This second option comes with button and zipper closure OR with a piece of spandex.
These AG Jeans, the best maternity jeans, are the former. At first, I wasn’t in love with this style. Before you really get a belly, this can seem a little cumbersome. And the pants were a bit stretchy. Well 18 weeks later, a couple extra pounds (all healthy), and a mini-human with an opinion, these are the most comfortable style!
Underbelly Jeans Review
So. Initially I was a fan of the under belly maternity jeans until that one fateful evening in Prague. I noticed my jeans felt like they were stretching and getting a bit looser. What I wasn’t prepared for, however, was the gaping 6″ rip just below the zipper that fateful night. Thankfully I had a huge coat on and thankfully we were close to the hotel because OMG!!!! Anyway, with all the movement you do and your changing body shape, the underbelly with zipper/button closure style isn’t always helpful.
Since that fateful night, I’ve gotten two other pairs of jeans. The first is the same style, in theory, as these black AG Jeans. They were my conciliatory pair foundat the H&M in Prague on the day after my ripping realization! They’re a nice wash and they worked just fine. I feel the elastic is too thick and I don’t think they’re grown as easily with me since I purchased them. I assume they’ll be lovely after I give birth to the little guy.
Pregnancy Boyfriend Jeans
The other pair of jeans I got was this pair of maternity boyfriend jeans. I actually think they’re super comfortable and quite flattering, so I’d recommend them. The thing about this jean style, however, is that I have to wear them LOW. My little guy gets cranky when I have them pulled up to where I think they ought to be. As the child of his mother, he lets me know when he’s unhappy. So I still wear this pair quite frequently, but I have to be mindful of how I wear them. Obviously you can’t predict all this, but this lower style can actually be a point of contention for your little one rather than you.
So, in the end that first pair I bought that I wasn’t too sure about turned out to be my pick for the best pair of maternity jeans. I wore them twice this week without any uncomfortable moments (for either of us). It’ll be interesting to see if I can truly wear them through the end of this pregnancy.
And if you’re only going to own one pair of maternity jeans, a skinny, black pair of jeans is honestly the best way to go. As you can see they grow with you and can easily be dressed up or down!
