So while we’re all trying to be amazing at pregnancy life – stretching, being diligent about stretch mark lotion, and sleeping AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, some things just happen whether you’re ready or not. Like pregnancy hyperpigmentation. I’ve always had a little pigmentation, but in the last few months, I’ve noticed light spots in all the places where I’ve suffered before.
It’s primarily just above my lips and on my nose, but I’m even noticing some spots on my cheeks and forehead.
After my facialist pointed it out 6-8 weeks ago, I’ve been doing some research on what prevents dark spots and how to treat the spots that have already come about. I’m ecstatic to say that it isn’t too hard to prevent or treat! And with exposure to the sun being the number one cause, I figured we could all use a little reminder this summer…

How to prevent Pigmentation
So, it’s probably no surprise that if sun exposure is the leading cause of hyperpigmentation, then you need to be super diligent about wearing sunscreen.
I shared the Best Sunscreens for Your Beautiful Face a few weeks ago, so you can go there to get some good products for protecting yourself. Be sure to note the minimum SPF you should look for and check out my tips for applying sunscreen, even though it can totally suck!
How to minimize Dark Spots
There are a few terms and ingredients you want to look for when it comes to finding the right products. The main term to look for is “brightening.” If you’re pregnant, however, you always want to check ingredient lists. And – and you know it pains me to say this (read more here) – you should check with your doctor if you’re not sure about what to use.
So the two ingredients that you want to look for are lactic acid and/or vitamin c. Both are pregnancy safe, but just check what else is in the mix. There are a number of masks to use weekly that are lactic acid, but then there are a variety of everyday skincare products packed with vitamin c! You can do whatever combination works for you!
