If there’s one thing to know about me, it’s that I turn into a pumpkin around 9:30 (under normal circumstances). My husband lovingly pokes fun at me. Even in our first year of dating, I remember telling him one night I wanted to stay out late with friends. He said, “let’s see.” And I got frustrated. But like clock work, around 9:47 (his empirically-determined time), I looked at him across the crowd and gave him my sleepy eyes. Nothing has changed (except perhaps that I accept my reality now). Needless to say, my nighttime skincare routine just can’t be complicated with my sudden need to head to bed!
I used to have a bunch of skincare steps, but now I’ve got it down to a pretty bare lineup. The trick is figuring out exactly what you’re trying to fix/handle with your skin and then find the best products for just those specific needs. If you look at my morning skincare routine, you’ll see a few repeats between my morning and evening go-tos. This just means even fewer containers on the counter and in the cabinet!
Nighttime Skincare Routine
So obviously getting your face clean is the most important step to any skincare routine. I have a preferred cleanser (step two), but this Precleanse is literally THE BEST SKINCARE PRODUCT I’VE EVER OWNED! Think of it as the best makeup remover you’ve ever experienced.
The amazing part, however, is that it comes out of the pump seemingly like an oil, but it isn’t oily at all. It immediately breaks down all the makeup on your face and then rinses away clean with water. Your face doesn’t feel like it has anything left on it – no residue from the precleanse even!
Ok. So I rinse off all the makeup and oily buildup from the day. Then I wash my hands with plain soap (find out why here). Turn off the water (don’t leave it running while you wash your face or brush your teeth!). Then I wash my face with this Purifying Cleanser for 20-30 seconds.
I’ve been using this cleanser for about 8 months now. It’s more intensive than the gentle washes I was using previously, but it really helps keep my skin clear without my having to worry about it drying out!
I use this Brightening Serum in the morning and evening to help with hyperpigmentation exacerbated by my pregnancy. It’s lightweight and very easy to use.
If you’re nervous about oils, I totally hear you. I was terrified of them for a long time. I think some of them are certainly too heavy – I still don’t use them much on my face. This Rosehip Oil though is lightweight, non-greasy, and it helps with cell-turnover (it’s the rosehip oil). I use it to help with my scarring.
If you want to use oils, it’s better to use them in the evenings. Let them do their work while you sleep. Moisturizing creams are better in the morning. I will note that you don’t want to use too much of this oil each time and be careful to let it dry a bit before you lay down on your pillow (especially if you have white sheets)!
