For some reason, winter is when we’re all so obsessed with our skincare routine. I think it’s the temperature variation, but for me, it’s my dry cuticles that really help to remind me to take care of my skin. One of the most important steps in any nightly beauty routine, is getting your face actually clean – hence cleansing oils and makeup removers!
The Most Important Step In My Nightly Beauty Routine
I’ve long used makeup remover to take off my eye makeup, but it wasn’t until my late 20s that I started to be concerned with actually cleaning my face than just getting my makeup off (so I couldn’t see it). This coincided with learning more beauty tips and updating my whole routine.
Then a few years ago, I was introduced to the magic that is cleansing oils. They sound scary if you aren’t into face oils, but actually they’re fabulous products that really help get all the makeup off so your cleanser can clean your face (not waste it’s cleaning power just getting rid of your makeup)!
Most cleansing oils are rubbed between your fingers. Then you wipe your dry face and rinse with water before cleansing. I think they’re far more effective than makeup remover, but I know we each have our own ways.
If you’re using cotton pads to apply your makeup remover, consider washable pads. This particular set is quite soft. They’re washing machine and dryer safe, so just throw them in with your laundry!

The very first precleanse I use – Dermalogica’s precleanse is still one of my absolute favorite products of all time. I love that their formula is incredibly effective but also easy to apply. I don’t feel as though I have to rub hard to get it to work at getting all my makeup off! It’s the perfect addition to your nightly beauty routine.

Clinique Cleansing Balm
No matter how many new brands come out, I will always have a soft spot for Clinique skincare products for their efficacy, their longtime ban on animal testing, and their efforts to make cleaner products even before it was the trend. This balm is more of a lotion feeling product, but it works just like the precleanse oils above!
