My workspace is split between two computers and my phone. And I spend at least one week per month traveling, oftentimes more. Because of my life being a little all over the place (physically more than mentally in this case), I’ve had to find a few things to keep me sane and on top of things (i.e. apps to keep you organized on the go). Or at least apps that can help me get back on top of things very quickly. I use a combination of 4 apps – three of which came with my phone. The fourth – a password saver – is one of those must have things that has been lifesaving!
Apps to Keep You Organized on the Go
Never Miss a Meeting or Phone Call
This is the obvious one, so I’ll start here – use your calendar app. iPhones come with an iCal app. Since I use gmail and google for my calendar, I downloaded the google calendar. Whatever calendar app works best for you is the right one. Don’t forget to add things in there consistently and to set up any alerts on things for which you might need reminding!
Get Reminders for those Things w/o a Date or Time
If you haven’t used the reminders app on your phone (iPhone at least), you are missing out! We all have those things we want to remember down the road but they aren’t really “calendar items.” Examples for me include remembering to call someone, paying a bill, following up on an email, sending a card, etc., etc., etc! The list is really endless.
The great thing about the reminders app is that you can just add things to the list, so you can refer to it when you want OR you can set reminder times to get alerts. For these alerts, I get notifications on my home screen. You can set them up as one time “to dos” or you can them repeat every day/week at a certain time. So cross it off today and get a reminder again next week at the same time!
The other great thing about the reminders app is that until you open the app to “check it off,” the notification will continue to pop up on your home screen. So you won’t forget.
Jot Down those Great Ideas
Another great app is the Notes app where you can write out whatever your heart desires on different “pieces” of paper. I have notes for to do lists, grocery lists, blog post ideas, hashtag lists, contact information, and the lord knows what else! No matter if you have reception or paper, you can jot down notes so you don’t forget those amazing ideas! And if you have a Mac computer, you can sync the notes between your iphone and computer.
Never Forget Passwords Again
The woman who helped me design my site a few years ago introduced me to the true magic of 1password. The app (available on desktop and as a mobile apps) stores your passwords. At the end of the day, you only have to remember ONE PASSWORD to get you in! You can organize all your login credentials (usernames and passwords) into folders and they’re searchable. It, obviously, takes time to set up, entering your passwords each time. It makes life SO much easier, however. A few great perks…
Once you set up your account on your phone or computer, you can sync your account on all your devices. Next up, if you login on your phone, the second you switch apps, the app automatically locks itself, so no need to worry about security of people using your phone (or worst case – if it’s taken).
With so many logins, staying organized on the go and being able to login to whatever I need (sometimes it’s my Starbucks app!) with ease is so, so wonderful!
