Sleep has always been important to me. It’s not that I sleep in like crazy (I really don’t), but getting a consistent night of sleep every day of the week has always been part of my M.O. In some ways, I can’t help it…
My body is a bit like clock work. My husband jokes that I turn into a pumpkin at 9:47pm (earlier now that I’m pregnant) and it’s pretty true. Other nights, however, I’m not quite so predictable, but I’m also big on my nightly routine. My husband and I run through the same routine every night and it helps to get us ready to relax and fall asleep.
In addition to those habits, however, is that we keep our bedroom fairly distraction free and we’ve invested in amazing sheets!
Distraction Free Bedroom
Somewhere along the line in my lifetime, I developed an aversion to TVs in my bedroom. I grew up with them in our rooms and I obviously understand the appeal of watching TV in bed.
Not having that as an option for a distraction (that’s always more than a few minutes), however, makes bedtime just that. Time to go to bed! My body and brain aren’t unsure if we’re going to bed or just chillin.
We have just one television – out in the living room. And as much as my husband dreams of having a TV in our room, I think he’s actually on board with the no TV policy as well. We keep our phones on our nightstands (but with dimmed lighting) and I always read before sleeping.
Our walls are also pretty plain. You can see we have some black and white photos on our nightstands (cheap finds at Target when I was in college if you can believe it). Obviously art can be very calming, but I also really love the notion of blank, white walls in my bedroom. I think it contributes to creating that calm space we go to just for sleeping!
The Best Bedding Sheets
I’d like to think I always appreciated good bedding, but a while back we started upgrading our sheets. It starts with the furniture, right? First it’s mostly hand-me-downs, then IKEA, then not IKEA. I think bedding and beds should be included in that transition to adulthood, but somehow it gets forgotten. So, our dream sheets are 680-thread count, supima cotton. And I’ll be honest, they aren’t cheap, HOWEVER…
Before you go running for the hills on the cost of these sheets, I want to defend them for just a minute. First of all, they’re oftentimes on sale. We have NEVER paid full price for them (and I never intend too).
Additionally, we’re on our third set now (after 5 years maybe?). Living in Los Angeles, flannel sheets are not a long-standing need (2-6 weeks if I’m lucky), so we use this one set of sheets pretty much all year. We use, wash, and reuse. And honestly, if I wasn’t so in love with white sheets, they’d probably last even longer.
And finally – THEY ARE SO STINKIN’ SOFT AND COMFORTABLE. I remember when my husband and I first got the sheets, we seriously started looking forward to going to bed just because our sheets were so soft, so welcoming, and made us so happy. Talk about a fabulous way to try to fall asleep!
Once we started upgrading our sheets and pillows (not actually an expensive investment), I developed an even stronger appreciation for great bedding and investing in the best bedding sheets.
Since first writing this post in April 2019, we’ve moved back to Northern California where flannel sheets are MANDATORY a few months out of the year. Since we love our regular cotton sheets so much, we obviously wanted to get flannel sheets that were equally as fabulous when getting into bed.
We decided to buy them from The Company Store. They have a wide variety of printed sheets that are adorable, but you probably aren’t surprised in the slightest that we went with a monochrome sheet set. During that sale we picked out the Legacy 6oz. Flannel Sheets and they are HEAVENLY!!!!
The Company Store also offers organic flannel sheets which I think we’ll look into next time we’re in the market – making little changes here and there as we try to live more with the earth!
