Years ago I wanted to write a post on how to help your favorite bloggers and small business owners.
As I was working to grow my own site and following, I was also working on social media for small businesses. We were all in need of the same help and it was help our friends could easily give but we felt awkward asking for. I never did write the post, however, and so it seems far overdue at this point.
There are so many ways to helps bloggers, website owners, and small businesses that take no money and little to no time on your part. I can’t tell you how helpful just one person doing just one of these things really can be…
Since sharing last week’s post on changing my career, I’ve had some lovely friends reach out to see how I’m doing. I am doing better this week. I was up at my mom’s last week, working (not blog-related) and it felt good to be otherwise productive.
I also did a little leg work (this time blog-related) to reach out to some connections I have. Both of those things certainly helped my frame of mind. I still don’t have a part two to the career change story to share (because I’m still undecided).
In trying to figure out what to share next, however, I have a few dear friends to thank. They asked how they could help and I realized it was time to write this post!

How to Help Bloggers + Small Business Owners
These ideas for how to help bloggers and business owners all run along the same gamut – helping share content, but the platforms and methods vary depending a bit on the niche they talk about and on what YOU feel comfortable with.
I assume most people aren’t super active on all social media platforms or online ALL the time. So find the method that works best for you. If you’re unsure what would help the most, feel free to ask that person what would help!
1. Visit their site or profile regularly
This is the most basic aspect of having a successful blog, profile, or business – yet it seems like the hardest one at times. Checking in to see new content or new products not only keeps us top of mind, it also helps with ad revenue or sales. In the world of ad revenue, every little bit helps!
Additionally, for bloggers especially, the number of people on our sites helps to get sponsored content. While you may or may not love sponsored content, it helps us earn money, letting us keep blogging and doing what we love!
2. Sign Up for Their Newsletter
If you’re thinking, yes I’ll visit the site, but you’re likely to forget (life is full of many things to remember, we get it), sign up for a newsletter.
Usually bloggers, website owners, and small businesses have a newsletter. It might be weekly, monthly, or quarterly. But it’s a great way to be reminded about us and our business.
There are often buttons through which you can sign up on a website, or if you can’t find it, just ask!
3. Sharing is Caring!
Besides keeping readers, followers, and customers, we’re also always looking to find more people who want to see what we create or sell. If you like the content or products, chances are good that your friends will too! So share your favorite blogger’s name with friends. Share their website or social media through Instagram or Facebook!
We do a lot of extra legwork to get in front of a large audience with the hopes of attracting some of them as interested followers. If you can share our stuff with people who are very likely to enjoy it, it’s that much better!
4. Like Our Posts on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc.
In the age of social media and sharing content, the simple act of liking a photo or link has diminished greatly. I can’t tell you how many people I’ve been behind in line or on the train who look through tens or hundreds of photos and never “like” one of them.
Beyond just telling us that the content is good, it actually really helps our content reach more people. Your like, comment, and share tells Instagram or Facebook that the content is good, so it shows it to more people!
I forget to like content too, so I get it. But now I’m making an effort to like as many photos as I can in my feed to help others out as well!
5. Leave comments
Even more important than liking a photo on social media is to leave a comment. If they ask a question, answer. It doesn’t have to be super long or deep, but it helps.
Along the same lines as liking a photo, not only does it help us figure out what you want to see, it tells the social media “algorithm thingy” that the content is of interest, so it shows it to more people!
6. Participate in our Instagram Stories
Instagram stories seem to have taken over all other social media posting places. It’s a place where we can share more authentic photos and stories. We can provide a place to have conversation, ask questions, and (for some of us) give links to swipe up to see something on the internet.
You’ll never guess, but responding to questions, replying to polls, and swiping up is great feedback for us and for the platform. This may sound repetitive at this point, but it’s such a fast and easy thing you can do that really does help!
SIDE NOTE: If you haven’t seen the stories of the bloggers you follow recently, just go to their profile and either click on their profile picture to watch their current stories or like their latest photo. It tells Instagram you want to see their content!
7. Pin and “try” on Pinterest
For those of you who live on Pinterest, this one’s for you! Repinning the content from our site helps to get it in front of more people. Whether you pin from our website or from our boards, sharing our content, helps tremendously. Pinterest is a great place to get more people onto our sites and to get introduced to new potential followers!
8. Tag us When you Recreate Our Content
This one is especially true for food bloggers and DIY bloggers. If you try something of ours, tag us on Instagram or leave a comment and photo on the Pinterest pin where you got the idea.
On Instagram, it’s great to tag us in the comment as well as in the photo. Instagram makes it difficult to catch all the comments, but photo tags are harder to miss. And Pinterest thrives off of those “reviews.” Share photos of your creation and what worked or didn’t work for you!
9. Enter Giveaways
I’m finicky about entering giveaways, so I understand if you’re shying away from this one. Bloggers run giveaways for two reasons. The first is to try to get more followers (usually on a specific platform). The second is because a brand with whom we’ve partnered has asked us to host the giveaway.
By entering the giveaways, you’re helping us get new followers and you’re helping us look better to the partnering brand! Most bloggers only pick brands that align with their interests, so in theory you should be interested too. You can always unfollow after a giveaway if you just aren’t enjoying the content.
10. Click on our links
Many bloggers make money through ad revenue or affiliate links. All companies are set up a little differently, but clicks on ads and links really can help us out. You don’t have to buy anything or sign up for any lists, but it helps us increase that extra flow of income.
These 10 ways to help out bloggers are just a start. If you only start doing one of them for every blogger you love or every small business you support, it will really help so much. You might think you’re just one person, but it only takes one person to start making those small differences really add up!!
