I’d never heard of muesli until I saw it at the market four or five years ago…and it only took me that long to make a homemade muesli! Embarrassing, right? This recipe is actually a basic recipe but with some spices, it quickly became a pumpkin spice muesli.
I was on a pretty big health kick when I first discovered the cereal. It sounded healthy, so I took it home to figure it out. I’m adventurous and weird like that! Made with grains, seeds, and nuts, it’s very similar to granola, but lacks the crunch and usual sweetness of granola.
Just like granola, I like to eat it on top of my yogurt, with a bit of milk. It’s also quite tasty soaked in milk for about ten minutes as a cold oatmeal. You can make hot oatmeal with it as well. Just use hot water or milk and let it sit a few minutes to soften.
After enjoying it again while we were in France, I had to try a homemade muesli. It is SO EASY, I’m mad I didn’t try it before!
Pumpkin Spice Muesli
What is Muesli?
One of the best things about muesli is that there are no guidelines for ingredients beyond the oats. You can use whatever dried fruits, nuts, and seeds you have on hand or suit your fancy. It’s great for finishing off those last few nuts or seeds and clearing out your cupboard for other tasty treats.
Ingredients
For this recipe, I used ingredients I seem to always have on hand (dried cranberries and nuts) in addition to a few treats like those dried figs and coconut. To bring this homemade muesli together, I added pumpkin spice seasoning. It’s almost fall after all, so why not add some of those delicious seasonal flavors.
So while there’s no pumpkin in this muesli, it has that warm earthy flavor we all love this time of year! Since pumpkin spice is really just a mix of those familiar fall flavors – cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, etc. – it’ll be perfect through the winter season at the very least.
It might just be my new favorite breakfast recipe. And it takes almost no work in the morning! If you want to switch up this basic recipe try toasted muesli with yogurt!
