Whenever I tell people that I’m a blogger, there is one question I get asked more than any other – how DO bloggers make money. While every blogger and website have a different makeup, situation, and reality (one that certainly changes over time), there is a simple, straight-forward answer. So here it is…
How do Bloggers Make Money?
All those annoying ads on people’s websites are money-makers. The more people on your site, the more money you can make. This is a really great way to make “passive income” (i.e. the traffic brings the dollar, you don’t have to solicit the income).
2. Commission-based/affiliate links
Basically with links if people click (affiliate links) OR click and buy (commission-based links) from your links, then you earn money. Usually the affiliate links offer far less in income, but every click adds up.
For the commission-based links, people actually need to buy after clicking your link. These pay much better but there is a whole lot more clicking on the internet than buying.
Examples of these link services are rewardstyle, shopstyle, Amazon affiliates, and CJ (just to name a few).
Sponsored posts are exactly what they sounds like – a brand or PR agency pays you to write about their product/service on your website or social media platform. These usually include many guidelines and contracts but can be a bigger bang for your buck. For huge bloggers, these come easily. For smaller bloggers, a lot more legwork is necessary for every single collaboration.
Most bloggers do some sort of combination of these. Each site has varying success with each of them as well. For example, one blog may make all their money from ads but never have sponsorships. other sites don’t run ads, so that source of income isn’t there.
Things can also vary from month to month or season to season. In January your primary income may be ad revenue but you have few sponsored posts. Then in July ad revenue is down, but you have multiple sponsored posts and did well with your affiliate links.
There are other methods of making money as a blogger, including (but absolutely not limited to) event hosting, event attendance/coverage, collaborations, and social media takeovers. But for the most part, that’s the short and simple answer to “how do bloggers make money?”
