Since discovering the cause of my cystic acne (I’m still in shock), I can now FINALLY focus on clearing my scars. In the last 18 months, I’ve tried a number of ways to get rid of acne scars – at home and with the help of a facialist. They have all helped (more details below), but now that I don’t have any new issues emerging, the efficacy of these techniques is so much more noticeable. If you have scarring or hyperpigmentation (hello, new pregnancy problem), then you’ll want to address the cause of your problem first before trying to clear your scars. Otherwise you’re kind of putting the horse before the cart (like I was).
Ways to Get Rid of Acne Scars
So if you remember back when I first shared my adult acne story, I was just coming off two years on a prescribed medication that helped but never truly solved my problem. The pills also left me feeling less than amazing. Since then I’ve started regularly getting facials. Things started to improve almost immediately even though I wasn’t on those heavy medicines. It was here that I did my first chemical peel series and was pleasantly surprised with how easy and painless it was.
Once I became pregnant in the fall, however, a few great ingredients had to go the way in my skincare routine. Of course, it was also during this time that I accidentally discovered that pesky cause of my acne and finally started to get it under control. So in addition to my existing routine, I started seeking out more items from clean beauty companies like Follain who my Boston friends are all OBSESSED with!
Clean Beauty Products for Scarring
I reached out to Follain asking about products that help specifically with scarring. They recommended four products (one of which I have to wait until after my pregnancy to use).
1. Intelligent Nutrients Detoxifying Glycolic Gel
This vegan gel product encourages skin regeneration (the goal of getting rid of ours scars). Apply it on a freshly cleaned face morning and/or night. I like to leave it on for a minute or so to sink in before adding any moisturizer. The container is rather large and will last a very long time!
2. Pai Rosehip BioRegenerate Oil
Pai products are well known in the clean beauty world for being effective and great for sensitive skin. If you have acne, scarring, or hyperpigmentation, then this is music to your ears (or your pores?).
I use the Intelligent Nutrients gel in the morning, but I use this Pai oil in the evening in place of a moisturizer. The rosehip extract is one of those fabulous ingredients that not only helps with skin regeneration but also with soothing any irritation. You can help soothe any problems while moving forward in improving your skin’s look. It’s hard to find products that do both at the same time – they seem counterintuitive. I’ve been using this oil for a few weeks and am already seeing so much improvement in my scarring!
3. Tammy Fender Intensive Repair Balm
Tammy Fender is one of those holy grail lines of clean beauty. This repair balm is actually a great moisturizer that isn’t heavy (so it won’t cause you to break out). The chamomile essential oil calms skin while also helping with uneven skin tone. It also has rosehip oil! A little goes a long way with this stuff, so you don’t need to use much. I’m using it in the morning after the glycolic gel and before sunscreen!
4. Tata Harper Resurfacing Serum
Tata Harper is one of the other holy grail lines in clean beauty. This resurfacing serum includes seven gentle acids to help remove dead skin cells, exposing beautiful, radiant skin. The major “power ingredient” in here is the willow bark extract – sadly a pregnancy no-no. This serum minimizes redness and smooths skin to help makeup go on and set smoothly..
