The question of how to grow your Instagram seems to be the most commonly asked question by anybody trying to blog or get their name out there. Instagram has become THE force to reckon with in recent years and many companies care just as much about your Instagram as your website (some more so). While I always emphasize blogging before your Instagram (your website really is yours), being active on Instagram is incredibly important! But don’t let the number of followers be your only goal. You also want real followers who like your content!
So, here are the first steps to creating a great profile AND increasing engagement…
1. Figure out your aesthetic. We often get caught up in each individual post, but remember a potential follower will look at your profile as a whole before deciding to follow. So make sure your photo content and coloring is consistent – create an image in the future follower’s mind of who you are and what you offer!
2. The language of hashtags is invaluable when connecting people of similar interests. While they have seen their highs and lows in terms of helping influencers, hashtags are on an upward swing at the moment. In addition to adding your photo to relevant conversations, your Instagram stories can be included in roundups of hashtag use (videos more than still photos), so remember to use them whenever possible. Accounts just starting out (and even those that have been around for a while), should be maximizing the limit of hashtags!
3. Engagement! Engagement. If you ask any influencer what to do to get followers, they’ll tell you to engage with other users. If you want to introduce your name/profile to new people, then go like, comment, and follow other accounts. Wondering where to find these users? Engage on people using a hashtag relevant to your niche. Or engage with followers/commenters on an account in your niche that’s bigger than you!
4. Join Instagram groups!! Instagram (like Facebook) runs on an algorithm that determines whether a post will be of interest to people (yes, even your followers). The more likes and comments, means better performance in the algorithm. Instagram groups are one of the best ways to get those. There are a TON of groups (usually organized through Facebook) to help you increase your engagement. Some groups facilitate ‘likes,’ so members drop a link to their profile or a specific post. In exchange for your liking each of the other posts, each of them will like yours! Other groups facilitate ‘comment pods.’ You’ll be in a group of similar influencers where you all will comment on each other’s posts.
For likes, try “Instagram Fabulous.” For comment pods, try “Instagram Posse” and all connected groups. *Remember these are Facebook groups, so search for the groups through Facebook. You’ll have to request to join!*
