Things are all over the place right now. And, yes, I’m just talking about my emotional and mental states right now. I’ve been overwhelmed with the struggles in our household and the struggles in our community, state, country, and world. It’s a lot to take in and we’re not at our best to begin with.
Last week I wrote a whole post (photos and all) talking about the difficulty of this time. And I spent the rest of the day in an angry funk…
I realized that writing about my experience right now actually made it worse. This may be the first time that writing about my experience didn’t help. And if it didn’t help me to write it, it certainly wasn’t going to help you to read it!
What’s Helping Me Get Through this Time
In this crazy place we’re in, we’re all finding little things to help us get by (and it’s ok if getting through each day is your success – it’s mine!). So on the off chance that you need something or need something new… here are the few things making each day and week happen for me (if only barely at times)…
The first is that I’ve been SO DILIGENT about writing the 3 things I’m thankful for each day in my Gratitude Plus App. My alert goes off at 9:45pm. And whether I do it right then or just open the app so it greets me when I open my phone again. I do it.
The things I input aren’t fancy or lengthy. There’s usually something about my little guy (his giggles, his soft skin, or his expanding language in sounds). Other things are little successes in the kitchen. There’s gardening. There’s a friend I talked to. I treat it as something to find the happiness in each day, nothing more than personal survival.
I’m currently on a 17 day streak and I feel like a rockstar when I see that! Each day I’m getting overwhelmed with things I’m not grateful for, so this is a positive way to wind down each day!
The second thing is KeVinyasa yoga on Saturday mornings. Full disclosure – Kevin is my brother-in-law. Week one or two of staying at home, he sent out a zoom link to family members for a Saturday morning gentle flow yoga – 30 minutes. Nine of us showed up. The next week – more than 20.
Since then he’s turned it into a more official thing with 3 classes per week, including a power flow (that’s quite hard)! The times don’t work for me most days, but I’ve been watching the videos in the evenings after C goes to bed. My husband is even joining me! It’s hard to look forward to things these days since weekdays and weekends mesh together. But this is keeping my eye toward the “weekend!”
And all the sudden, I feel empowered to get moving; to get my 10,000 steps each day; to eat more veggies after my bagel!
And finally my garden. If you follow me on Instagram, you’ve seen my lemon tree, my succulent reorganization, and my new herb garden. I’ve been doing about 1-2 hours each weekend and looking forward to it (and planning if necessary) all week!
And you know what? My bell pepper plants are already bigger and there are sprouts in some of the herb containers!!! It’s so exciting!
Sending you strength, love, and happiness to find the little things working for you.
