Seven Layer Bars

old fashioned 7 layer bars on parchment paper squares

These old fashioned 7 layer bars are famous in my family. They are delectably delicious and yet so easy to make. With only seven ingredients, they come together quickly and with very few dishes to do afterwards. It’s the best of both worlds! Even friends who don’t like coconut like these morsels.

Old Fashioned 7 Layer Bars

I love these bars so much, but I never find them made right at bakeries. I see some recipes with white chocolate chips, but I think that’s overkill.

The butterscotch flavor is really what makes these seven layer bars so classic. The flavors marry together perfectly in the oven and melt in your mouth. It’s really hard (I think impossible) not to eat too many of them.

Luckily, these bars freeze well, which is great because the recipe makes a ton of bars.

If you can’t get enough of dessert bars, try my slightly modified version with these dulce de leche layer bars too.

Magic Cookie Bar vs. Seven Layer Bar

I’ve seen these old fashioned seven layer bars also called “magic bars” and I totally understand why. The various layers of butterscotch chips, coconut, and graham crackers melt together perfectly in your mouth.

The two names refer to exactly the same recipe, so whether you’re feeling dreamy or pragmatic, you have a name for both. Either way, you’ll love this recipe!

Eagle Brand Seven Layer Bars

In my bit of research for magic bars online, I noticed that the Eagle Brand of condensed and evaporated milk seems to have a bit of a claim on this recipe!

My family has always used Eagle Brand for condensed and evaporated milk, so it made sense to me why we’re so familiar with this recipe and why I always buy their cans.

I think brands dream of concocting delicious recipes to be associated only with their name (like rice krispie treat variations), but it sounds easier than it is!

This is the “RE-AL” recipe that works for these bars. The alternatives just won’t do on a dish like this!

These are my favorite bars! Addictive and delicious. I line pan with parchment paper which eliminates the bars from sticking to the pan.

IMPORTANT! “SWEETENED” condensed milk (not just condensed milk). It’s the sugar that makes thus recipe work.
