Smoked Salmon Breakfast Toast

Smoked Salmon Breakfast Toast - Lox and Goat Cheese Toasts

This easy smoked salmon toast is my first homemade dish with the smoked fish. To say my husband loves it is an understatement…

I hated salmon until I was in college. And smoked salmon is really only a recent thing. Yes, it’s taken me until the age of 30 to enjoy smoked salmon. My dad would think that’s sacrilegious, but what can I say?

Since having a scrumptious lox and cream cheese bagel last summer, however, I’ve had a new albeit small appreciation for smoked salmon. The salmon on that bagel was buttery – sushi-quality really.

I’m still not sure I could handle any run of the mill lox, but good quality smoked salmon and I’m all there!

Easy Smoked Salmon Tartine - Lox and Goat Cheese Toasts

Easy Smoked Salmon Toast

On our long trek to Zimbabwe, we had a three hour layover in Amsterdam that turned into seven hours with the flight delay. I was tired and antisocial to say the least.

One highlight of that terribly long layover was lunch. I don’t actually know what time my body thought it was, so we’ll call it lunch. My mom and brother picked out open-faced salmon sandwiches to share. I didn’t care about too much at this point and at least it sounded light.

What it was, however, was a new level of amazing. There was a hint (I really mean a hint) of horseradish in the cheese spread that gave it a whole new level of flavor but didn’t overpower it at all.

The recipe below has a small amount of horseradish in it – what I think is just the right amount of the strong flavor to be present but not overwhelming. If you’re into horseradish, then by all means add more!

I want to say that each of these toppings (lemon zest, capers, tarragon, and poppy seeds) is optional on a smoked salmon tartine. But I don’t really think they’re optional.

They each complement the salmon perfectly and I really think it’s a complete package. And since this breakfast recipe is so easy, spend the time on the finishing touches!

Smoked Salmon Breakfast Toast- Lox and Goat Cheese Toasts

Dairy Free Cream Cheese Spread

Milk & Eggs recently sent me some fun new ingredients to check out, including this delicious Blue Hill smoked salmon and an almond-milk based cream cheese like spread from Kite Hill.

The recipe below, however, calls for goat cheese or cream cheese. This dish is super delicious with the dairy-free spread as well.

Obviously the yogurt isn’t dairy-free, but you could omit that if you like. The yogurt helps with creaminess and adds just a hint of tartness to the smoked salmon toast that I enjoy a lot.

SMOKED SALMON BREAKFAST TOAST

My love for tartines is usually reinvigorated every time I travel abroad. In this case, it was an extended layover in the Amsterdam Airport. These smoked salmon tartines are top notch because of a bit of horseradish added to the creamy cheese. It can’t be beat!
