How to Style Dark Blue Jeans

As a denim aficionado, it’s hard for me to pick a favorite wash of jeans, but I can say that dark blue jeans are probably the most versatile jean wash. They can be dressed up and down with minimal effort. Below are all my tips and photos for how to style dark blue jeans.
The great thing about dark blue jeans is that they can feel polished and modern without being a straight black jean (obviously another favorite of mine). The right outfit combinations can instantly upgrade a look. But never fear, because they can also just be your everyday jeans worn with a T-shirt and sneakers!

How to Style Dark Blue Jeans
I love light wash jeans, but let’s be honest – they have a more relaxed vibe. That’s why I love dark wash jeans. They’re the perfect balance of relaxed jeans and yet elevated without any work. Dark blue jeans can easily transition from casual to dressy depending on how they are styled.
Like any pair of pants, once you find the right fit, a lot of the work is done. Beyond that, we just need to look at a few color combinations and outfit proportions (e.g. tailored jeans with a looser or fuller top). And just like that, your dark blue jeans are a foundation piece that works for everyday wear as well as more elevated looks.

Are Dark Blue Jeans in Style?
I will start here by saying that I think whatever jeans you feel fit best are always in style for you! Trends change. Your body doesn’t change so much and your style doesn’t have to be currently on trend. Just wait a few years and you’ll be back in vogue! The point is to dress for your style and your body.
Thankfully, however, dark blue jeans are almost always in style. It’s more the cuts and lengths that change. These dark washes remain in style due to their versatility and timeless appeal. Alongside black pumps, a leather jacket, and a button down shirt – your dark wash jeans will always be there for you!
And while I could never own just one pair of blue jeans, it’s the single wash I’d recommend most. They tend to last longer in fashion trends, making them a reliable wardrobe staple. And I can tell you from decades of experience, they will always be central to your wardrobe!
Since jeans are such a wardrobe staple, I also think it’s worth being thoughtful about where you buy them. If you’re looking to build a more sustainable wardrobe, see my guide to sustainable jeans brands for some of my favorite options.

What Colors Go With Dark Blue Jeans
When creating an ensemble, treat your dark blue jeans like any other neutral. I equate them primarily with black jeans (especially those darker washes), but they’re actually GORGEOUS with various shades of brown!
Neutral Tones: white, black, beige, gray
You really can’t go wrong with neutrals and dark blue denim. White creates a crisp, classic contrast, while black gives dark blue jeans a more polished, streamlined look. Beige and tan add warmth without competing with the deep blue, and gray creates an understated, sophisticated combination.
These are especially good choices when you want an outfit that feels simple, timeless, and easy to accessorize.
Try: dark blue jeans + white button-down + loafers or dark blue jeans + beige sweater + ankle boots.

Earth Tones: olive, camel, rust
Earth tones are a natural match for dark blue denim. Olive green and camel create an easy, everyday combination, while warmer shades like rust and terracotta add a little more seasonal color.
This color palette works particularly well for fall outfits with dark blue jeans, especially when paired with suede boots, leather accessories, or cozy knits.
Try: dark blue jeans + olive sweater + brown boots or dark blue jeans + trench coat + simple white tee.

Bold Colors: red, emerald, mustard
Dark blue jeans are also a great foundation for a pop of color. Because the denim is relatively dark and understated, bold shades like red, emerald green, and mustard yellow can stand out without making the outfit feel overwhelming.
If you’re hesitant about wearing a bright color, try keeping the rest of your outfit simple. Let one colorful sweater, jacket, shoe, or accessory be the focal point.
Try: dark blue jeans + olive green sweater/jacket + simple flats or dark blue jeans + mustard yellow tee + neutral shoes.
Soft Tones: blush, light blue, cream
For a softer, more feminine look, pair dark blue jeans with lighter shades. Blush pink, pale blue, and cream create contrast while keeping the overall outfit feeling relaxed and fresh.
This is an especially easy palette for spring and summer outfits with dark blue jeans, although cream sweaters and blush accessories can work beautifully year-round.
Try: dark blue jeans + blush sweater + neutral flats or dark blue jeans + light blue button-down + white sneakers.

Denim & Blue: Light Blue, Medium Blue & Navy
Don’t be afraid to wear blue with blue. Pairing dark blue jeans with a lighter blue shirt creates an easy contrast, while navy or other deep blues create a tonal, sophisticated outfit.
The key is to vary the shades or textures so the outfit doesn’t look too matched. A light blue chambray shirt, navy sweater, or striped blue-and-white top can all work beautifully with dark denim.
Try: dark blue jeans + light blue button-down + brown loafers, or dark blue jeans + navy sweater + simple gold jewelry.

What to Wear with Dark Blue Jeans
What shoes go with dark blue jeans?
My top picks for shoes to wear with dark blue jeans are a classic pair of ballet flats, ankle boots, and a good pair of heels. Which you wear just depends on your style and the occasion for which you’re dressing!
What top to wear with dark blue jeans?
Depending on what you’re dressing for, many tops pair beautifully with dark blue denim. I love a solid T-shirt with my dark jeans for a casual look . And then you can always work up to a work appropriate ensemble with a button down top and a blazer.
What jacket goes with dark blue jeans?
Surprisingly, my favorite jacket with my dark blue jeans is probably my plaid blazer. It’s tailored, elegant, and adds just a pop of fun.
Of course, a leather jacket is always good and a good trench coat is the epitome of classic style.
What accessories go with dark blue jeans?
My favorite accessory with my dark blue jeans is a good belt. I really love my dark brown belt with gold hardware, but you can easily do a black belt.
If I’m trying to look elevated, I usually pair my gold jewelry with the outfit (again silver works, so you just want to try to keep it cohesive).
How to dress up dark blue jeans?
Dark blue jeans are easy to dress up with a button-down shirt or polished sweater and a blazer. Add a belt, simple jewelry, and a great pair of heels to finish the look. I especially like a pump—particularly a block heel pump—for a little extra comfort.

How To Wear Dark Blue Jeans
Tuck or Half-Tuck Your Top
Since most of my jeans are more tailored, I like to wear a loose top (slightly oversized or just less tailored). To make these work better with jeans – rather than two wholly separate pieces – I like to do a tuck or half tuck into the front of my jeans. I can’t recommend a good belt for this style enough. It’s almost like you’re tucking the shirt to show off the belt!
Balance Fitted and Loose Pieces
One of the keys to dressing well is actually balancing volumes of clothes. First, your clothes should fit appropriately – not too tight or oversized. Beyond that, you want to balance top and bottom. A tighter fitting pair of pants lends itself nicely to a looser shirt or sweater.
Wide leg or even flare cut jeans pair nicely with a top that’s more tailored and fitted. You want to avoid oversized top to bottom as well as too tight top to bottom.
Choose the Right Rise and Length
Finding the right rise (low-rise, mid-rise, or high-rise) and length comes down to your proportions, your style, and how you want your jeans to fit. For example, I have a long torso and shorter legs, so a high rise is a good fit as it makes my legs look longer.
The length depends on what shoes you’ll wear most with the dark jeans. A longer cut works best for shoes with heels. A cropped cut is good with flats and sandals.
Use Accessories to Elevate Simple Outfits
This is one of the best tricks to dressing well without rebuilding a wardrobe – the right accessories. I’ve mentioned the importance of a great belt. I recommend a black and a dark brown belt – they’ll take care of nearly all your needs.
A few years ago I discovered the wonder and joy of a silk scarf. It’s a small addition with the biggest impact. See how to wear silk scarves for ideas and instructions on how to add them to your ensembles.
Jewelry of any kind always seems to elevate a look. If you’re building your jewelry wardrobe, I’d recommend starting with some classic gold or silver pieces that can be worn universally in your wardrobe. Cabine is a great place to start for some of these basics.
Dark Blue Jeans Outfits
Casual Dark Blue Jeans Outfit
Dark blue jeans don’t have to feel dressy. One of my favorite ways to wear them casually is with a simple T-shirt and sneakers. The dark wash gives the outfit a little more polish than a lighter wash would, while the casual pieces keep it comfortable and everyday.

Dark Blue Jeans and a Button-Down
A button-down shirt is one of the easiest ways to make dark blue jeans look polished without feeling overdressed. I especially like a white, black, or chambray button-down with dark denim, paired with loafers, ballet flats, or a simple heel.
Yes, you can absolutely wear a black shirt with dark blue jeans. It’s a great pairing when you want the streamlined look of a darker outfit without going fully monochrome.
For a more classic look, opt for a tailored button down. For a more trendy or casual look, opt for an oversized fit of your button down.
Dark Blue Jeans With a Blazer
A blazer instantly makes dark blue denim feel more intentional. Try a plaid blazer for a little personality, or keep things classic with black, navy, or camel. Add a simple top underneath and finish with loafers, ankle boots, or heels.

Dark Blue Jeans and a Sweater
For cooler weather, pair dark blue denim with a sweater in a neutral, earth tone, or soft color. A tailored or slightly fitted sweater creates a polished silhouette, while a looser sweater works beautifully with slimmer jeans.
Dressy Dark Blue Jeans Outfit
When you want to dress up dark blue jeans, start with the denim and build the rest of the outfit like you would with a pair of trousers. A polished blouse or sweater, blazer, belt, jewelry, and heels can make dark blue jeans appropriate for a dinner out or a less-formal evening event.
Dark Blue Jeans With Boots
Different silhouettes of jeans work well with a variety of boots. For example, skinny or straight-leg jeans can work well with ankle boots, while a wider-leg jean can be styled with a heeled boot that gives the hem a little lift. Since I have shorter legs, I often do a small fold up of my skinny jeans to create a smalls pace between my jeans and boots.

FAQs
How Do I Keep Dark Jeans from Fading?
Dark jeans (like all jeans) should be washed sparingly. Use cold water, a light detergent, and wash your jeans inside out. Air dry dark jeans to help maintain color as well.
You’ll want to wash your jeans separately from others clothes the first time or two to prevent color bleeding – though the cold water minimizes this drastically.
Can I Wear Dark Jeans to Work or Evening Events?
Very dark blue jeans and black jeans can be worn to work. Style them like you would a polished pair of work pants and elevate the rest of the outfit. Dark blue jeans can also work for a casual evening event, but the rest of the outfit should feel intentional and polished. Choose a very dark wash, then add a dressier top, blazer, jewelry, and shoes.
