Best Under-Eye Concealers for Mature Skin

Finding the best under-eye concealer for mature skin can be tricky. The wrong formula or application technique can settle into fine lines, emphasize wrinkles, or leave the under-eye area looking dry rather than bright and refreshed.
The good news is that the right concealer and application technique can make a big difference. In this guide, I’m sharing what to look for in concealer for mature skin, my favorite concealers for different coverage needs, and how to apply concealer without emphasizing fine lines.
Concealer serves two main purposes: covering discoloration, such as dark circles and blemishes, and brightening areas of the face. If you want to cover dark circles, you’ll want a shade that blends with your skin tone. For brightening, you may prefer a slightly lighter shade. Your ideal formula also depends on how much coverage you need and the finish you prefer.

Best Under-Eye Concealer for Mature Skin
Before choosing a concealer, think about what you want it to do. If you have dark circles, you’ll likely want more coverage. If your goal is to brighten the under-eye area, you may prefer a lighter shade or a more subtle finish. The best under eye concealer for mature skin depends on your skin, the coverage you need, and the finish you prefer.
I own two concealers. Most days, light coverage with a boost of brightening is all I need. When I haven’t slept well or am under the weather a bit, I have a concealer with more coverage. Owning two concealers is perfectly fine. Our lives and skin aren’t the same day-in and day-out! Why Eye Creams Matter
Before we get into finding the best concealer, it’s important to talk about your skin. A well-hydrated under-eye area gives concealer a better starting point. The right eye cream can help with hydration, while some formulas are designed to address the appearance of puffiness and dark circles. With regular use of an eye cream that works for your skin, you may find that your concealer applies more smoothly.
My favorite eye cream is the Powerlight eye cream (a lightweight eye cream that helps with hydration, puffiness, and dark circles). For a slightly heavier cream, I recommend the Ultra Renewal Eye Cream (an eye treatment that also helps with fine lines.
What to Look for in a Concealer for Mature Skin
Hydrating Ingredients
Long gone are the days of makeup and skincare being totally separate. A lot of great makeup now has skincare ingredients. Ingredients like snow mushroom, hyaluronic acid, jojoba oil, and marshmallow root extract help with hydration, which is key to limiting settling from your concealer and keeping the under-eye area hydrated.
Creamy Formula
When looking at a concealer, you want a creamy formula. A creamy concealer formula can be especially beneficial because it blends more easily, looks more natural on your skin, and feels less drying than a drier, more rigid formula.
Buildable Coverage
If you need coverage, look for a buildable formula. This allows you to apply a thin layer first and add more only where needed to cover dark circles or discoloration. Building coverage gradually can help you avoid applying more product than you need. The inner under-eye area is often where darkness is most noticeable, so start there and add coverage wherever you need it.
Skip Matte Finishes
For mature skin, I prefer a glowy, hydrated finish. Matte finishes can accentuate fine lines, wrinkles, and dry areas, making texture more noticeable rather than creating a smooth, refreshed appearance. Look for a creamy formula with a natural or radiant finish instead.

How to Apply Concealer on Mature Skin Without Creasing
Step 1: Prep and Hydrate the Under-Eye Area
If your under-eye area feels comfortable and well-moisturized, you may be able to apply concealer directly to your skin. If you need extra hydration or want to smooth the area before makeup, apply a lightweight eye cream and let it absorb.
Primer can be a helpful step before applying concealer, especially if you aren’t applying eye cream right before your makeup. Apply a small amount with a concealer brush or your ring finger, gently dabbing it into the under-eye area, and let it settle before applying makeup. I like this primer.

Step 2: Apply a Small Amount of Concealer
Start with a small amount of concealer and apply it only where you need coverage or brightness. If you’re looking to brighten the under-eye area, you can gently tap on the product with your ring finger. For more targeted coverage over dark circles, a small concealer brush can help you apply the product precisely without disturbing the layers underneath.

Step 3: Blend
Blend the concealer into your under-eye area. Once you’ve achieved your desired coverage, use your brush or ring finger to gently blend the edges into the surrounding skin.
Step 4: Smooth and Set Your Concealer to Prevent Creasing
Continue applying the rest of your makeup while your concealer settles. Before applying setting powder, return to your under-eye area and gently tap and smooth away any product that has gathered in fine lines. This step is important because powder can set concealer in place, including any creases that haven’t been smoothed out first.
If your concealer tends to crease or wear away throughout the day, apply a small amount of lightweight setting powder with a soft brush. I like this translucent finishing powder. Focus on the inner under-eye area and anywhere else that needs extra staying power.
Use as little powder as possible to maintain a natural finish without emphasizing dryness or texture.

How to Brighten Eyes with Highlighter
Highlighter can do more than add shimmer to your cheekbones. Used strategically, it can brighten the eye area and give your makeup a more refreshed appearance. For mature skin, I prefer creamy formulas that blend easily and add light without emphasizing texture.
Use Creamy Highlighter Under Concealer
If you want extra brightness beneath your eyes, try applying a small amount of creamy highlighter before your concealer. Focus on areas where you want to reflect light, then apply your concealer over it and blend the two products together. This can add a subtle glow beneath your concealer without requiring extra layers of concealer for brightness.
Use a light hand and choose a subtle formula. The goal is a soft, luminous finish.
Add Highlighter to the Inner Corners and Beneath the Brows
For another easy way to brighten your eyes, apply a small amount of highlighter to the inner corners of your eyes and just beneath your eyebrows. A touch of light in the inner corners can make the eyes look more awake, while highlighting beneath the brows can help define and lift the appearance of the brow area.
A creamy highlighter or a finely textured powder with a subtle sheen works well. Blend gently and use just enough to catch the light without creating an overly shimmery finish. For more tips, see my tutorial on how to brighten under eyes.
Common Under-Eye Concealer Mistakes to Avoid on Mature Skin
Applying Too Much Product
Applying too much concealer can settle into fine lines, emphasize texture, and make mature skin look cakey rather than natural. Start with a small amount and build coverage only where you need it for a smoother, more skin-like finish.
Using a Drying Matte Formula
Matte concealers can accentuate wrinkles and emphasize dryness, making the under-eye area look more textured. Choose a creamy concealer with a natural or radiant finish for a more hydrated, skin-like appearance.
Skipping Hydration
Hydrated skin provides a better base for concealer. If your under-eye area feels dry, use an eye cream or hydrating primer before applying makeup, and give it time to absorb.
Over-Powdering
Too much setting powder can make the under-eye area look dry or emphasize texture. Start with a tiny amount and apply more only if you need additional staying power.
Tips for Making Under-Eye Concealer Last All Day
To help your under-eye concealer last throughout the day, start with well-prepped skin and let your eye cream or primer settle before applying makeup.
Apply concealer in thin layers, adding coverage only where you need it. Continue with the rest of your makeup while the concealer settles, then return to smooth away any product that has gathered in fine lines before setting with powder.
Use a light dusting of setting powder only where you need extra staying power. Too much powder can emphasize dryness and texture.

What Type of Concealer Is Best for Mature Skin?
A hydrating, blendable concealer with buildable coverage is a good starting point for mature skin. The best formula is one that feels comfortable on your skin without emphasizing dryness or fine lines.
