How to Use Body Butter

I love body butters and have for years, but I only really learned how to use body butter properly to get maximum hydration recently- it’s easy to do but not often discussed. I’ve also found my holy grail product – the best body butter and it’s by one of my favorite brands!

How to Use Body Butter

The first thing to understand about any moisturizing product is that it’s designed to hydrate as well as lock in hydration. Because of that, they all need to have moisture to lock in as well as water (or similar) to moisturize your skin. With that in mind, you need to have moisture on your skin before applying your body butter.

It’s similar to using skin toners (see what are skin toners for?) on your face. In fact, you can use a toner or hydrating mist before a body butter, but you don’t have to. Here are the 2 easy ways I add moisture to my skin before applying body butter.

When I shower, I don’t towel dry my body any more. Instead, I wipe off the water, leaving some water on my skin. I immediately do my AM skincare routine and then use my body butter. My skin isn’t wet, but there is still moisture there. This has made ALL THE DIFFERENCE for moisturizing my skin.

If you aren’t showering before using body butter, you can use a wet washcloth or, as I like to do, use a spritz bottle with water or rose water inside. Again, this just adds a bit of moisture for the body butter to use to hydrate your skin.

Best Body Butter

Ok. So now that you know how to use body butter to get the most hydration, let’s talk about some great body butters, including what I think is the best body butter.

Innersense Body Butter Review

Ok. Before we get to far, this Innersense body butter is the best body butter I’ve tried. The following ones are really good too, but I’m so much more aware of how soft my skin is with this one AND it has the least strong scent. It does still have a scent, not to worry, but it isn’t as in-your-face as the next two.

Beautycounter Body Butter review

I really like the feel of the Beautycounter body butter. It isn’t too thick and it rubs in very easily. I find the scent on the sweet side, which doesn’t prevent me from using it, but I think it’s a very distinct smell. It does work really well though.

Osea Body Butter Review

Probably the most well known body butter in the clean beauty world is the OSEA body butter. This one feels a little thicker to me than the above two, but I think it’s a lovely consistency. The OSEA brand smell is very ocean and beach-forward. I enjoy the scent, but I have a friend who can’t stand it. So just beware that the sea scent of the line in general is a subjective thing.

Osmia Organics Body Mousse on Counter

Osmia Body Mousse Review

This body mousse by Osmia is kind of like a body butter, but it’s the extreme of hydration and not for everyone. The body mousse is actually whipped body oil. It has a lovely, thick feel and is very hydrating – definitely need to have damp or even wet skin.

So, I got this for myself and while I loved the experience, I found my legs breaking out after a while – it much just too heavy for me. I ended up offering some of it to my mom, however, and she’s now on her 3rd jar and loves it – nothing has been able to give her the level of hydration this does, so I provide it as a good option for dry skin.

Clean Skincare

I’m a bit of a clean skincare fanatic, but it’s been a lot of learning. If you’re really starting fresh, you’ll want to figure out what your skin type is. From there, it’s important to get the most out of your skincare routine. Here is my AM skincare routine but find what works best for you. A few places to get started…
