Medley Home gifted us this item. All opinions in this organic latex mattress review are my own.
When it comes to home sustainability basics, it’s a combination of actions and purchases. And when it comes to your health, it’s important to consider the food you eat, the products you use on your body, and your bed (since you theoretically spend ⅓ of your life there). For the ADU, we opted for a natural latex bed by Medley Home.
Organic Latex Mattress Review
We finally finished our backyard ADU. Since this was, in essence, an add on, we didn’t have furniture with which to fill the space (also why it may all seems a bit bare still). Since the space served foremost as an office for me and a guest room, getting a mattress and bedding was of the utmost importance.
Only since moving into our 1920s modernized Bungalow four years ago, did we prioritize sustainable and non toxic living. While we’ve updated to sustainable towels and sustainable bed sheets, we haven’t had a need for a new mattress, so here we are trying it out.
Since we theoretically spend ⅓ of our lives in bed (with our face and body pressed up against it), the idea of eliminating plastics and synthetic items seems like a no brainer, doesn’t it? We thought so. There are many options out there, but we opted for an organic latex mattress and are so happy with our decision thus far (months into our 20-year warranty)!
Latex is naturally elastic and dense, hypoallergenic, antimicrobial, and moisture-wicking, making it a perfect mattress material! Because of its density, it also resists motion transfer, so if you have a bed buddy, you won’t feel their every move. Shop it here.
Our Medley organic latex mattress was shipped in a box. The mattress was very tightly rolled. The box measured about 24″ x 24″x 48″. While it was a compact shipment, which was great, the box is VERY HEAVY. Neither my husband nor I were able to move it alone and we even used a dolly to move it back to the ADU where it lives. Once it’s out of the box, you have to unroll the tightly wrapped (with plastic) and then let it expand. The expansion happens very quickly. I think it really took two of us to easily set it up, however, because of its weight.
Latex mattress last more than 20 years. Medley even offers a 20-year warranty on all their mattresses!
Our mattress isn’t hard, but it is firm. I love this kind of feel. It allows your body to comfortably rest on the bed, but I don’t feel as though I’m getting lost in the mattress.
Yes and no. There are two kinds of latex. One is plant-based – made of rubber tree sap and typically requires no fertilizers or pesticides. The other kind of latex (like latex gloves) is synthetic (often petroleum-based), so it’s similar to most other plastics. Medley’s latex is plant-based and not synthetic!
With so many pluses in the natural latex mattress column, it’s easy to see why we went this route. But lets’ get to the important part – IS IT COMFORTABLE?!
Since we don’t sleep on this mattress nightly, I had to ask our weekly guests (my mom). She had no complaints. She said the bed was very comfortable and very sturdy.
My only complaint is that there isn’t a box spring mattress option, so the mattress will sit lower to the ground – all dependent on buying one elsewhere and/or your bed frame of choice.
Does Medley Home Sell Other Items?
Yes, and they’re droolworthy!! They’re made with OEKO TEX and/or organic fabrics (read: what is OEKO-TEX?) and FSC-certified American-sourced wood. They also offer furniture made with natural latex – with all the same benefits as those with the mattress!
