Sustainable Bedroom Furniture
Our backyard ADU might almost be near completing (yes, we’re officially 1 year in on our 3-4 month project). I’m trying to get ready too early, but I think I can safely start looking for secondhand AND sustainable bedroom furniture because if nothing else, guests will sleep in there and my office will move back there.
(see our original ADU plans here as the final ADU design)

Sustainable Bedroom Furniture
The space to outfit (decorate?) isn’t big, but we don’t really have anything extra to put back there to furnish it. So we’ll be doing a combination of secondhand items and buying new as we’re able to find the right items and fit them into our budget.
What makes furniture sustainable (or not)?
As with seemingly every aspect of sustainable living, the factors of sustainability in bedroom furniture are many and a little complicated.
There are two main things to talk about here. First, specifically related to eco-friendly living relates to the location, sourcing, and processes of production. Are the parts of the furniture pieces (e.g. wood, fabrics, and hardware) all coming from different places and creating a lot of emissions before the item is even assembled?
Additionally, how were the materials sourced? Is the wood from responsibly managed forests? Is it upcycled or salvaged? and what sorts of waste management were involved in the process. And what about the cotton or linen? Lots pesticides used to grow it? Lots of water waste?
Second, is the conversation about health and safety of the producers but namely for you – the consumer. Since I like to sleep on my bed (with my preferably sustainable bedding), there’s concern about what’s in your mattress and the furniture around you since you’re just breathing in and out.
I will note the crossover between sustainably sourcing and “clean living” is big, but they aren’t mutually inclusive (meaning something that’s “clean” or “safe” may not be sustainable).
If you’re ready to take a nap after that discussion, I hear you, and I’m already snuggling up to my pillow.
Ok. But as with just about everything, there are certifications to look for…and well, some brands are just sort of nailing it for us, so we can just take that nap – worry free!
