11 Spring Appetizer Ideas
Winter recipes tend to be more involved (and none of us are complaining about warming up the house and filling it with yummy smells), but now we have more sunshine and the promise of summer to come! And, somehow, life is still a little busy right now, so we need recipes that are crowd-pleasing but not difficult, reliable but not fussy!
When it comes to feeding guests (young and old), I always like to keep things simple – at least on the balance. If dinner is on the easier side (i.e. my husband is grilling some thing up), I like to spend a bit more time on the appetizer. If I’m all in on the meal, then an easy starter will be happening!
And with increasing things going on in our family (looking at you, Little League), I really like any dishes or parts of recipes I can make ahead of time!

What are Spring Appetizers?
I know we’re all still learning what fruits and vegetables are in season when. I’ve got you covered (see below), but here is the list of spring foods and recipes. Spring brings early berries, lots of peas, broccoli, cherries, and loads of fresh herbs (increasingly becoming my favorite things to grow and cook with).
Because these are all such yummy flavors, small start dishes are a great way to enjoy them (and savor the excitement of spring produce). They can whet everyone’s appetite, stimulate their flavor palettes, and get the conversation started about why these spring delicacies are so wonderful. Too deep? Maybe, but you know I’m an aficionado of seasonal eating!
What Makes a Good Spring Appetizer?
- seasonal and fresh in flavor
- easy to prepare with minimal cooking
- served in small, bite-sized portions
- visually appealing with color and texture
- suitable for make-ahead preparation when possible

Spring Appetizer Recipe Ideas
Asparagus Crostini
This asparagus crostini appetizer recipe is one of my favorites. The white bean spread, sliced fresh baguette, and rosemary merry beautifully in this roasted asparagus crostini for the perfect flavor combination! This a great one to make ahead (just assemble right before serving).
Roasted Asparagus w. Pesto
This recipe for roasted spring vegetables with mint and meyer lemon dressing screams spring. Purple and pink-skin radishes interspersed with tender asparagus spears just looks happy. Add a bright (and seasonal) mint and lemon dressing for the perfect healthy appetizer. Best for a seated crowd.

Basil Hummus
Basil is just starting to popup, but now is a great time to really get this recipe in your arsenal. Perfect with veggies or pita, basil hummus uses up a lot of the fresh herb and the taste is just so yummy. It’s also great with grilled veggies and spread on a sandwich!
Strawberry Salsa
Tomatoes aren’t quite here yet, but why wait? Strawberry salsa replaces tomatoes with strawberries and uses scrumptious fresh cilantro for a lovely fruit salsa! Delicious with chips, it’s also great with fish tacos!
Pea Soup Shooters
A fun one to serve in small bowls or shot glasses for a standing occasion. Pea soup shooters are actually healthy, packed with flavor, and really easy to make ahead of time!! And that drizzle of olive oil and fresh dill are optional but, I think, totally necessary!
Prosciutto & Broccoli Appetizer
Move over pancetta asparagus, this prosciutto and broccoli appetizer is the new favorite. Thinly sliced prosciutto is wrapped around lightly steamed broccoli and then broiled for a delicious combination. Beware – everybody will be reaching for more than one!
Pea Pesto Dip
The first pea recipe I ever remember making, this pea pesto dip is an unexpected one. The naturally green dip is made with fresh or frozen peas, parmesan, olive oil, garlic, and seasonings. Easy and DELICIOUS! This one can certainly be made ahead of time!
Avocado + Sun-Dried Tomato Crackers
Possibly the easiest avocado appetizer, this simple recipe is just crackers, sliced or chopped avocado, finely chopped sun dried tomatoes, and some cilantro for decor. no need prep anything- just assemble the ingredients!
Blueberry Chutney
The blueberry season is short and sweet. Make it last a little longer with savory blueberry chutney – delectable with goat cheese. You can easily serve it with grilled meats or just put it on the side of a cheese board!
Radish Crostini
This radish appetizer is a fun one. Beautiful slices of radishes sit on goat cheese and toasted baguette – what could be better?! Add finely sliced chives and sea salt for the ultimate yumminess!
Garlic Butter & Bread
Don’t laugh! You know you want it and so will everyone else. A delicious homemade garlic butter is really the most amazing thing. You can make it ahead of time (heck, even freeze it), and you’ll have something to serve that will hae everyone remembering the night for weeks to come!!

How to Plan a spring Appetizer Menu
A few helpful tips if you’re planning a spread of appetizer recipes this spring…
Use seasonal spring ingredients like herbs, berries, and fresh vegetables
It wouldn’t be a spring appetizer if you didn’t use the fresh bounty of the season. The brightness of these fruits and veggies just can’t be beat.
Include a mix of cold, warm, and fresh appetizers for balance
It’s always fun to have a mix, but feel free to skip the warm ones if you’re low on time or just want everything to sit out easily for a while.
Plan at least 1 dip, 1 veggie option, 1 protein bite, and 1 light snack
If you’re serving a meal after, definitely stick with this light variety. A nice array would include the basil hummus (a creamy dip), the broccoli prosciutto, pea soup, and the garlic butter with bread or crostini.
Prioritize make-ahead recipes to reduce day-of stress
A number of these spring appetizer ideas can be made ahead of time – entirely or partially. The pea soup can be made 1-2 days ahead of time. The garlic butter can be made any amount of time in advance – just freeze if it’s more than 1-2 days. And the blueberry chutney can be made and refrigerated up to 1 week ahead of time!
Keep portions small to encourage variety and grazing
Any recipe can be made into small bite size servings or full portions. Keep the bread slices small for the toasts (baguette is good for these). And emphasize the fresh veggies and fruits with each of these recipes!
