Sustainable Winter Coats + Outfit Inspo

Sustainable Winter Coats

In the past two weeks, I’ve traveled to southern Indiana and Denver. Both had snow on the ground, both were cold, and Denver was legitimately freezing (painfully so). While I don’t think I’m cut out for daytime highs much below 30ยฐ too often, I do love myself some good winter outfit layering, especially if it includes some sustainable winter coats!

Sustainable Winter Coats

You know my motto – the most sustainable thing is the one you already own, and I’m pretty happily set with my winter coat selection. I have one olive green, long wool coat and one long, black puffer jacket with hood. Both of them are so warm and so stylish! Only one of them has sustainable clothing materials, but both already exist and they’re already in my closet!

Below are a few similar items using recycled materials, fair trade practices, and/or are from B corp companies (see more on b corporation meaning). Outerwear, ESPECIALLY, is something you should pick for the long haul – sustainable winter coat or not. Lots of cold weather usage for many stylish years to come.

I really feel that my wardrobe (and yours too) are complete with a puffer coat and a tailored option – as I shared in my winter wardrobe capsule basics! I like long options as I find them warmer AND more stylish, but if you live in warmer places, you may not need or want the length!

Cold Weather Outfit Ideas

I know how easy it is to get lost under the bulk of coats to stay warm. It’s the main reason I’ve been more intentional with my outerwear – I don’t want it to serve solely as warmth. I want it to primarily serve as warmth but not make me feel like I’m lost in the folds.

If your coat has bulky hood, your neck and neckwear are you place to shine. I love a fun turtleneck, but I know they aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. If you’re unsure about a turtleneck, try folding it in three instead of two to make it a little shorter. I also have two “bulky” turtleneck sweaters. The necks come up high but aren’t tight. They’re AMAZING!!

And then a good scarf. I’m “boring” and just have this black fringe scarf, but I have a few ways to wrapping it around my neck to make things feel different day to day. You can see it blending in with my black coat in this 40ยฐ weather outfit!!

If your coat doesn’t have a hood, get creative. Hooded sweatshirts underneath provide a small twist. Yes, to the turtlenecks above. And even collared sweaters and shirts can be a fun layer-able addition!
