Summer Outfits
Summer is always a hard time for me to feel inspired about getting dressed. With so many days over 100, it ends up just being a comfy tank and shorts. After a few summers in Sacramento, however, I feel like I finally had a season of mom summer outfits that weren’t just functional.
Our little guy is 5 now, so we’re thankfully past the days of spit up and chasing him around to make sure he doesn’t break his adorable face! It always makes me smile to see the postpartum mom outfit of the Madewell vneck tee, oversized jeans, and Birkenstocks. I lived in the same uniform – it really is perfect for the job at hand.

Mom Summer Outfits
I’m in a phase with my style where my outfits are stylish, functional, and so me (see how to find your style). You’ll see a lot of the same pieces reworn here but with different shoes (opting for flats and sneakers from wedges or heels).
There are a few piece you’ll see that have been in my closet for a few years and there are also a few new items this season as I’ve sought to fill a few warm weather clothing holes in my wardrobe. And there, sadly, is an item or two that will probably be in their last season this year as I’ve worn them to bits.
You can see the pieces I think you need in a summer capsule wardrobe. I obviously don’t stick to a set number of pieces, but I always have the bases covered and anything beyond those are bought with specific intention – none of this buying because it’s cute or a good deal stuff!
I tend to like longer summer dresses – midi to maxi. I’m a big fan of straw hats (see what I think are the best straw hats). And I can’t get enough of my Eric Javits purses, made of recycled plastic and unendingly stylish and durable.
The black & white dress was actually the dress I wore to my wedding rehearsal dinner in 2015!! It was a last-minute $15 find on a clearance rack. It’s still my go-to year after year!
One of the things I’ve really fallen in love with are knit tanks. They have an elegant vibe and are usually pretty airy. The tan one is from Eileen Fisher 4 years ago. The white knit tank (currently on sale) is from last summer and then I added that high neck one this year (a find in Cork City, Ireland!). I really love them.
And then, mid-length shorts. I have the distressed organic cotton high waist denim shorts from two summers ago and these navy blue linen shorts. Dark linen shorts are elegant, cool and comfortable, and all together the best thing! And read my รtica jeans review for more on the sustainability of these denim shorts.
If I had to pick a favorite kind of ensemble for everyday, it’d be a tank top and jeans. Summer isn’t often jeans weather, but sometimes you have a need, and sometimes we can a break in the heat. A rule of thumb for me to to wear a looser tank with tighter jeans and a more fitted tank with looser jeans!
