Fall Style Outfit Inspiration

fall style outfit inspiration - barn coat with sweater and black jeans

Fall and early winter are, surprisingly, my favorite seasons in which to dress. The layers are fun, but it’s not so cold yet that you just want to bundle up and hide in layers. Fall style just lends itself to so many great outfit combinations, beautiful colors (yes, I love a good earth-toned wardrobe), and some versatility of a wide range of silhouettes. So here is some fall style inspiration.

Of course, if you’re trying to fill out your closet for the season, you’ll want to start with my fall capsule wardrobe basics!

Fall Style

Like florals for spring (groundbreaking!), fall style calls for muted (but not boring) hues, bold pops of colors, and big prints. And whether you lean toward warm or cool colors, you can find anything to work for your style and coloring! I’m neutral but lean warm. I love the look of olive green, burgundy, camel brown, and (wait for it!) black. In theory an eggplant or deep purple would be good too, but I just don’t own any.

If you lean cooler, try darker hues of brown, cranberry, more yellow olive greens, and bluer purples!

Beyond that, you own your style. You’ll see below that I’m usually in jeans (skinny jeans are my ride or die), neutral sweaters, and camel brown boots (tall or ankle). Camel browns and black are my neutrals that mix and match with everything. You can see how I pull it all together in my fall travel outfits!

Fall Fashion Trends

A few realistic fall fashion trends this year (i.e. for everyday wear – for all of us) include mixing textures (think boucle with silk or satin), accessories (e.g. layering necklaces, bold pendants, long necklaces), country (think riding boots and barn jackets), and anything vintage!

The thing I like about each of these trends is that unless you go overboard, these will transcend trends one year to the next.

What to Wear this Fall

Sweater Outfits

If there’s one thing we all love for fall, it’s cozy sweater outfits. Sweaters are a great piece for staying warm, but I think they lend themselves so well to layering – not just tanks and tees underneath, but a mock turtleneck and, especially, a button-down.

I love to sneak a peak of my under layer either at the neckline or out my sleeves. For the latter, I either push up my sleeves or fold the sleeves back for an intentional show of my shirtsleeves underneath. Get more info on sustainable sweaters before buying more!

Outfits with a Scarf

And if there’s one necessity in fall style, it’s a scarf. Truthfully every ensemble is an outfit with a scarf when I’m traveling in cooler climes or just generally out and about. It’s an easy way to really warm up.

I used to collect scarves like they were going out of style (which they never will), but now I’ve really pared back. I have a black fringe scarf that is the best travel scarf (hands down), a bold print scarf, and then one silk scarf (see how to wear silk scarves). I think I have a few others, but I almost never reach for them, feeling adequately taken care of with these three.

Tall Boot Outfits

As you can see, I have a serious love for my camel brown suede knee-high boots with a heel. They’re made by UGG (yes, the slipper company – they make great shoes) and I struggle to find a similar pair every year to share. But if you ever find a pair, grab them. You won’t regret it.

For the most part, I tuck into my tall boot outfits whether I’m wearing skinny jeans or tights. I don’t love the look of my knees (a silly thing, I think), so you won’t see me highlighting them. These boots are great with dresses of all lengths too. I do the same with all my knee high boots too – heeled or flat.

Ankle Boot Outfits

Ohhh, the beloved ankle boot. I love the look of an ankle boot or bootie. I usually prefer them to be flat or with a very small heel. The heeled versions look great, but I like booties for their versatility and I’m often on the go.

I like to wear ankle boot outfits one of two ways. First is to fold up my pants to highlight the boot. I do this with and without socks showing.

For pants that are long enough, I’ll pull them over the ankle boot. I really don’t like to tuck my pants into my boots. It often looks bulky and with my curvy, short-legged frame, it throws any balance of my shape off-kilter.

Fall Dress Outfits

Wearing dresses in your fall style is aways a good look. Best of all, fall dress outfits can easily be layered under or over. See how I layer under a dress in super cold temps (hint: thermal tights!). The great part is that you can wear any length of dress (a maxi might be difficult if it’s truly dragging on the ground),s o it expands the versatility and wearbility of many warmer weather dresses.

Vest Outfits

We are a vest family. Yep, all 3 of us because they’re just so great. Vests are a wonderful layer, keeping your core warm without burying you in a jacket. They’re also great for your fall style because they let you show layers and textures without overdoing it.

The only thing to keep in mind with vests is if you plan to wear them under outer layers. Puffer vests are stylish and fun, but they are a headache to get under a jacket. I’ve actually really fallen in love with my thinner vest (just as warm) as I can layer it through the cold weather.
