Organic Shoes
One of the most common questions about sustainable living I’m asked about is shoes – namely recycling them. They’re a complicated item because of all the various materials used in them. I have my roundup of sustainable shoes (and even sustainable kids shoes), but this is a roundup exclusively of organic shoes.
Organic Shoes
When it comes to the term organic, there are a few things to note. First, a company can only claim something is organic if they’ve been certified by a verified organization (e.g. USDA, CCOF, Oregon Tilth). The cost to become certified is sometimes prohibitive for smaller companies.
Many companies, like our favorite winery near Santa Rosa – Belden Barns – follows all the same organic, sustainable practices but they don’t have the certification. A small shoutout of help to the small businesses doing great things.
BUT that organic certification is SO easy for us as consumers.
The only thing to note about organic shoes is that not all materials can be “organic.” Leather, plastic, cork, and rubber just aren’t possible to be labeled as organic – even if they are sustainable. So what you’ll see here are shoes with organic components, namely cotto, latex, and linen!
