Sustainable Wallets & Brands
My wallet, like few other things, is something I think about so rarely. I’ve had the same wallet for 6-7 years – a Christmas gift from my husband. It’s starting to show its wear and the snap doesn’t seem to be holding anymore, so I’ve been inching closer to replacing it. Obviously sustainable wallets are what I’m looking at, but where to begin?

Sustainable Wallets
Here’s the things about sustainable wallets, just like nearly everything else in fashion, sustainable doesn’t look one way. I’ll detail a few options depending on your style, which I think is important to maintain, but no mater what you pick, plan to use it and care for it for years and years to come!
Sustainable Wallet Materials
- Recycled Materials (e.g. plastic waste)
- Upcycled Materials (e.g. rice/feed bags, inner tubes, denim)
- Sustainable leather
- Organic Cotton
There are some really creative people out there making wallets out of recycled materials and even upcycled materials. Imagine plastic waste turned into a polyurethane used in a wallet – seems exactly like new, but it’s not virgin materials.
A lot of creators are also making wallets out of upcycled materials, including rice bags, inner tubes, leather, denim, surf shorts, etc. Etsy has loads of options, or check out any local creator markets and popups! And don’t forget how to shop locally on Etsy!
You can read my post on sustainable leather and certifications to learn more about leather. The concern with leather is namely in the tanning process as the chemicals can be quite toxic and numerous – and then released into waterways.
And I’m generally a fan of the organic life. Read more about organic women’s clothing and just organic farming for textiles in general to learn more!
Whatever your style, there is a sustainable wallet option out there for you, but you may have to look. If you’re stuck on a designer wallet, a secondhand option is SO sustainable. See here for great secondhand designer wallets!
