What Color Shirt Goes with Green Pants

From the woman who basically lives in jeans, a post on what color shirt goes with green pants might seem far afield, but I’ve long had at least one pair of green chinos in my wardrobe and always love the variety they offer – while still pairing wonderfully with the rest of my clothes. And for the record, there are beautiful olive green jeans in my past that I wish were still in the rotation, so it’s still right in my wheelhouse!

What Color Shirt Goes with Green Pants?

The various hues of green pants range from kelly green (yes, I owned a pair this color 10 years ago!) to a dark, muted military green or olive green pant (what I prefer now)! The shades of green, however, also include forest green (truly beautiful and classic), light shades of green, and even mint green – the latter of which I just can’t picture on me, but I’ve learned to never say never.

The great thing is that no matter the hue of your green pants, the shirt colors options are about the same. And you know why? Because green truly is a neutral. The earth toned hue is the canvas for every outfit – your green pants creates new looks for you without the trickiness of new colors! I do love easy!

It’s no surprise to see me wearing mostly black and white shirts with my green pants – they make up most of my wardrobe after all, but a nice muted khaki or tan is also a go to for me. And when I’ve had a navy blue shirt in my wardrobe (something it’s probably currently missing), I wore it with green pants too!

More pops of shirt colors that go with green pants include peach, pink (muted and bold), light blue, purple (paler or darker/bolder), and denim of any color! If you want to wear something that’s dark brown, I think lighter green colors are easier. I’m not saying dark brown and dark green can’t go together, but it’s easier to drown yourself out in earth tones – too much.

If you want to wear a red but not look ready for December 25, opt for a dark red, like a burgundy, garnet, or maroon (something like the coat in this black tights outfit is what you could aim for).

What to Wear with Green Pants

If you think of your green pants as the neutral, then you’ll go far with how to style them, playing lots of colors and patterns off of them. There are so many shades of green for pants. I now opt for more olive or military green, but I absolutely remember a pair of kelly green pants in my closet in my post-grad school days.

If you think of your green pants as the pop of color, then you’ll want to opt for a single color for your remaining items. Black is always a go to for me, but white/cremes, navies, and even pinks can be a lovely compliment. Basically your shirt pairs with your shoes, outerwear, and/or accessories.

All these ideas work for casual outings to more formal occasions – the materials and cuts of each item are really what matter!!

Green Wide Leg Pants Outfit

I go into way more details and tips in my wide leg black pants outfits, but ultimately wide leg pants outfits (green or otherwise) should be balanced. Wide leg pants are looser (or wider at least), so you want to pair them with a tailored top. I almost always tuck the shirt in (partial tuck or full tuck) to really get that balance. The shirt adds that balance between drowning in your clothes and thoughtfully putting an outfit together.

I always think wide leg pants look better with some sort of heel or wedge. Because these pants give the illusion of wider, adding height, lengthens – providing even more balance.

Green Straight Leg Pants Outfit

Straight leg pants don’t look good on my body shape, but you can style them the same way I style skinny or cropped pants. Since these pants are generally more fitted, I opt for a slightly larger or looser top. It doesn’t have to be oversized. Something like this sweatshirt tee would be perfect.

And any style of shoe will work here – heels, wedges, ballerina flats, and sandals!

Olive Green Linen Pants Outfit

Olive green linen pants with a button down shirt makes a perfect outfit. All these outfit photos show white button downs, but a black shirt would be just a beautiful – both colors pair beautifully with medium to darker greens. Maybe I just always have white ones within reach?

My other favorite material to wear with linen? Knits! Above I paired linen with my timeless cashmere sweater (see how I style it this layered sweater outfit)! In cooler weather, a sleeveless off-white sweater would be a dream! In my perfect world, linen is worn with wedges too, but that’s not a steadfast rule (just a Mediterranean day dream)!

If you’re wear a green trousers pants outfit to be more dressed, then a classic button down and belt is always going to be a good call. You can play around with it – make it more casual with an oversized button down. You can even wear it open over a more fitted top.
