Sustainable Fall Dresses
You all know I’m a denim jeans girl to my core, but I’m trying to lean more into dresses in cooler weather. And all I’m eyeing these days are darker neutrals and bold prints in fall dresses!
Summer fashion has a lot of options. While a part of my denim aficionado self weeps everyday I can’t wear jeans, the options for shorts, dresses, and even skirts (though rarely in my world) gives me more of that carefree vibe.
Once we’re definitely into winter, I sometimes feel stuck in pants and sweaters (with as many layering tank tops and shirts underneath to stay warm). So I’m trying to lean a bit into fall dresses to minimize that stuck feeling.

Sustainable Fall Dresses
The silhouettes for fall dress are varied. Long sleeves seem like the default, but those can come with maxi, midi, and shorter dresses. Alternatively, you can do a longer dress with shorter sleeves!
I think the biggest component to a dress this season is the color and/texture. Similar to the hues in my fall nail polish roundup, fall screams burgundy, olive green, and eggplant hues along with burnt oranges and deep yellows.
Bold prints, however, in a darker palette are also perfect.
And don’t forget about materials. Linen is a year round choice. Yes, you can certainly wear linen in fall and winter! Corduroy and denim are other sturdy options. And then, of course, sweater dresses!
Layering Dresses in Fall
I consider myself a pro-layerer (can I write that on a resume?!) whether it comes to sweaters or dresses.
If you figure out your layers right, you should be able to wear nearly any dress from early fall to late fall. Below are my go to options for warming up a dress outfit, adding each option
- Option 1: a jacket or sweater – the obvious layer
- Option 2: a tank top underneath the dress along with the jacket
- Option 3: tights as well as the tank top and jacket (see this black tights outfit)
- Option 4: swap tank top for long sleeve shirt. A fun idea for this is to do a button down, collared shirt under a dress!
- Option 5: Thermal tights. 100-200 denier tights are ideal. The higher the denier measurement, the warmer they are (see layering under dresses)
- Option 6: coats and longer coats at that!
Another fun option for any button up dresses is to wear them like jackets. See this shirt dress outfit for inspiration!!
